Penny Oleksiak Withdraws From Worlds, Citing Pending Whereabouts Case
Canadian Olympic gold medalist Penny Oleksiak is withdrawing from the team for the 2025 World Aquatics Championships due to a pending whereabouts case.
Oleksiak made the announcement on social media, and Swimming Canada confirmed it with a post.
Oleksiak confirmed that she is “involved in a Whereabouts case with World Aquatics that’s still in the preliminary stages.”
“I want to emphasize that this Whereabouts case does not involve any banned substance; it’s about whether I updated my information correctly,” Oleksiak wrote. “…I am and always have been a clean athlete and will be making no further comment at this time.”
Oleksiak said she is withdrawing from Worlds “out of respect for Swimming Canada, my fellow racers and clean sport.”
Swimming Canada posted the note, adding this comment:
While it’s tough news, she’s putting the team first due to potential consequences for failing to update whereabouts information. Swimming Canada is in full support of Penny’s decision and we believe she is a clean athlete who made an administrative mistake. We wish her well and look forward to seeing her back in the pool.
Oleksiak, 25, is the most decorated Olympian in Canadian history with seven medals. She won the gold medal (in a tie with American Simone Manuel) in the 100 freestyle at the 2016 Olympics at the age of 16, one of four medals at that Olympics. She added three relays medals in Tokyo in 2021 and competed at the Paris Olympics in 2024. The Toronto native has bounced around training locations over the last couple of years, leaving the Swimming Canada High Performance Centre and spending time with Mission Viejo Nadadores in California.
Whereabouts cases have ensnared other gold medalists, including Tunisian Ahmed Hafnaoui, and other high-profile Canadians, most recently Ruslan Gaziev.
Oleksiak had won the 100 free at Canadian Trials in June, earning a spot in the individual event at the World Championships by hitting the automatic qualification time. She was also likely to swim the 50 free, which she won at Trials in a high B cut.
