Para Swimming World Series: Leanne Smith Wins Fifth, Gia Pergolini Adds 2 Medals
Leanne Smith made it 5-for-5 at the Para Swimming World Series stop in Indianapolis, and Gia Pergolini picked up two medals on the final night of the competition.
Smith, who set three world records and won two events on the first night of the competition, went 40.27 seconds, allowing the S3 swimmer to win the multi-class women’s 50 freestyle based on time standard points. Pergolini was second in 27.97 (she was 27.90 in the morning), followed by fellow American Grace Nuhfer in 28.15.
Pergolini, an S13 swimmer, won the 100 back in 1:06.05. Mary Jibb of Canada was second, with Ellie Marks edging fellow American Julia Gaffney for third.

Gaffney went 3:01.81 to win the women’s 200 individual medley. Mallory Weggemann was second, with Australian Kael Thompson besting countrywoman Lakeisha Patterson for third place. (Olivia Chambers had been fourth in prelims.) Australia’s Emily Beecroft won the women’s 100 fly ahead of Nuhfer, with Thompson third.
Jessica Long finished eighth in the 100 back, the S8 swimmer a spot behind Weggemann, who was also fourth in the 50 free. Long had been seventh in the prelims of the 100 fly. Summer Schmit finished sixth in the 200 IM and 12th in the 100 fly.
Koehn Boyd picked up two medals. The S10 swimmer won the 100 fly in 56.59, ahead of countryman Lawrence Sapp. In the 200 IM, he went 2:12.70 to finish second to Australian SM14 Ricky Betar (2:12.53). Sapp was also second in the 100 back to Thomas Gallagher of Australia, who went 1:02.94.
Simone Barlaam denied Gabriel Araujo another win, the Italian S9 swimmer going 24.99 to capture the men’s 50 freestyle. Araujo, an S2 swimmer from Brazil, was second. Aussie Callum Simpson was third. Barlaam was also third in the 200 IM and fourth in the 100 fly.
