Great Britain Leads European Gold Count; Italy Wins Most Medals

Great Britain moved from six to eight golds during the final session to secure the top position in the European table. Its 14 total medals tied Germany for third most behind Italy and Neutral Athletes B.

Italy‘s balance across the podium produced six golds, eight silvers and six bronzes. Germany also won six golds, while France and Hungary finished with four apiece.

The breadth of the European field was notable: 24 teams won at least one medal, compared with nine at Pan Pacs.

United States Dominates Pan Pacs Medal Standings

The United States won 19 of the 41 Pan Pacs events and finished with 17 more total medals than Australia. The Americans collected 51 of the 123 medals awarded in Irvine.

United States Tops Pan Pacs Medal Standings Against a Short-Handed Australia

The United States won 19 of the 41 events at the Pan Pacific Championships, collecting 51 of the 123 medals awarded in Irvine. The Americans finished 17 medals ahead of second-place Australia, but the final standings do not tell the entire story.

Australia arrived in California without several of its biggest stars. Kyle Chalmers and Cameron McEvoy focused on the Commonwealth Games, while Mollie O’Callaghan withdrew because of an ongoing back injury. Kaylee McKeown was also unavailable because of illness, and the retired Ariarne Titmus is no longer part of the Dolphins’ international roster.

Despite those absences, Australia still won 14 gold medals and finished with 34 medals overall. The performances of Lani Pallister, Sam Short, Meg Harris, Ben Armbruster, Matt Temple and the Dolphins’ emerging swimmers made Australia’s showing considerably stronger than the raw medal gap might suggest.

The United States clearly dominated the overall Pan Pacs medal standings, but Australia’s success with a short-handed team added important context to the final comparison.

Canada finished third by total medals with 13, while Japan won three golds and nine medals. China completed the top five with two golds and seven total medals.

Six World-Record Swims Across the Two Championships

The two meets produced six world-record swims across four events. Sara Curtis lowered the women’s 50 backstroke record twice at the European Championships, swimming 26.63 and then 26.56. Johannes Liebmann broke the men’s 1500 freestyle world record in 14:26.79.

At Pan Pacs, Kate Douglass lowered the women’s 50 freestyle world record twice, first to 23.49 and then to 23.19. The United States also set a mixed 4×100 medley relay world record of 3:36.70.
