Organizers For Paris 2024 Olympics Plan To Propose Four New Sports For Inclusion
The Summer Olympic Games may soon have a new sport: breakdancing. According to a report from the BBC, the organizers of the 2024 Olympics in Paris are planning to propose legislation to include the sport to the International Olympic Committee.
Their proposal will also include surfing, climbing, and skateboarding, all sports that are making their debut at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, bringing a potential four new events to the Paris Olympics.
Tony Estanguet, three-time Olympic gold medalist and head of the Paris 2024 organizing committee, told the BBC that the new sports would make the Games more “urban” and “artistic.”
The IOC has until December of 2020 to consider the proposal, when it must then make a decision on whether to include the sports. Breakdancing was recently added to the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.
The BBC article notes that other sports who have been discussed as possible additions to the Summer Games were dismayed not to be included, notably squash and karate. While karate will be featured at the 2020 Tokyo Games, it is not included on the list of proposed sports for Paris.
