NCAA Women’s Championships: Texas Torch Passes to Campbell Stoll in 200 Fly

A farewell to three-time NCAA champion Emma Sticklen could’ve meant the Texas dynasty in the 200 butterfly was at its end.

Campbell Stoll had other plans Saturday night. And she had Sticklen for inspiration.

Stoll went 1:50.26 in a back-and-forth dual with Alex Shackell, the Texas senior taking the title by .14 seconds at the wall. Shackell was second in 1:50.40. Both were under the McAuley Aquatic Center of 1:50.61 from Kelsi Worrell that had stood since 2016.

“It’s definitely an honor to kind of continue the legacy of the fly school, being at Texas, and to learn everything from Kelly Pash, Olivia Bray, Emma Sticklen and all of the ones who came before,” Stoll said. “It’s truly incredible to kind of carry the torch.”

Sticklen, now an assistant coach with Penn, wasn’t on deck Saturday. But he was watching. Stoll heard in the back of her mind Sticklen’s exhortation that, ‘OK, when I’m done, you’ve got to carry the torch. I’m passing it to you.” She got the text to that effect pretty soon after.

“She texted me right after, and was like, ‘I can’t even say I couldn’t believe it, because I knew you could do it,’” Stoll said. “So just having that on my back, it was really nice.”

Shackell was first at 50 yards by .01 seconds. Stoll was first at 100 yards by .02 seconds. They turned for home with Shackell opening up a relatively dominant .14-second lead. But Stoll came back in 29.93, the second-fastest of the meet, to edge the 30.31 of Shackell and claim the second national title for Texas this week, joining Jillian Cox in the mile.

Stoll was seventh in this race last year and 12th as a freshman.

Hannah Bellard of Michigan had the fastest final 50 in the field at 29.79 to finish third in 1:51.17. She had been fifth last year and 11th as a freshman.

Tess Howley of Virginia was fourth for a third straight year, this time in 1:51.69. She beat Stanford’s Caroline Bricker, down two spots from last year to fifth. Tennessee got sixth and seventh with Emily Brown and Ella Jansen, respectively. Cal’s Lilou Ressencourt was eighth.

Stanford picked up solid points with Charlotte Hook in 10th. Virginia’s Bailey Hartman was 13th for the Cavaliers.
