NCAA Division II Championships: Tampa Takes Men’s Title in Final Night Lead Change
The lead in the men’s competition at the NCAA Division II Championships changed three times in the final session Saturday night.
It started as the property of Drury, by 3.5 points. It went to Tampa. In the third-to-last event, it returned to Drury by 4.5 points.
And when all was settled, the Tampa Trojans were the NCAA champions, reclaiming a title they last won in 2024 and in which they finished second in 2024 to Drury, which then vacated the title.
On the women’s side, there was no such drama thanks to the buzzsaw of Nova Southeastern. The Sharks clinched a fourth straight NCAA title, with two gold medals on the final night, including an NCAA relay record that has become their sole property of late.

Women’s 1650 freestyle
It’s a distance treble for Justice Beard, the Missouri St. Louis junior going 16:24.18 to add to her 500 free and 1,000 free crowns. She was second in this event last year.
Nova Southeastern’s Hailey Williams finished second in 16:36.85, up two spots from last year, to grow the Sharks’ lead to 60 points over Tampa. Colorado Mesa’s Olivia Hasson was third with teammate Hanna Sasivarevic sixth. Between was two Simon Fraser swimmers, led by Delrae Vetter. Tampa was seventh and eighth, led by Burlingtyn Bokos.

Men’s 1650 freestyle
UIndy’s Swann Plaza doesn’t leave empty-handed in the gold medal department, and he nearly took a record with him. After finishing third in the 500 and the 1,000, he got to the top step on the podium by going 14:52.11. That dethrones Jacob Hamlin, denying the Tampa junior his third gold medal, though it is his fourth top-two finish. Hamlin was second in 15:00.42. Plaza was within three tenths of Hamlin’s NCAA record from last year.
Plaza also helped Indy make up 14 points on Colorado Mesa to jump into third in the team standings.
Findlay’s Sebastian Camacho Gomez was third in 15:03.28. Paul Demesy of West Chester finished fourth.
Thanks to Hamlin, the Trojans were plus-21 over Drury, taking the lead by 18.5 points. Barnabas Fluck was 10th for Tampa. Drury had just Colby Hughes in 14th.

Women’s 100 freestyle
Make it three titles for Kristina Orban, who claimed the 100 free in possibly the race of the meet on Saturday. Orban went 49.34 to get her hand to the wall first, .01 ahead of Emily Mears-Bentley, the 200 fly champ showing plenty of range. Third was Zsofia Kurdi, Orban’s Nova teammate, in 49.30.
The fourth- and fifth-fastest times of the night came from the B final, with Sophia Leo of Concordia in 49.68 and Tilde Morin of Tampa in 49.71 for ninth and 10th, respectively. Then came Ada Qunell of Colorado Mesa, officially fourth in 49.73. Eight swimmers broke 50 seconds.
Orban was second last year, though her winning time was way shy of the 48.07 that Luna Mertins of Lynn used to set the NCAA record last year.
Nova Southeastern dominated, going 1-3-6-11. Maxine Egner went 49.92. Subtle foreshadowing for the 400 free relay.

Men’s 100 freestyle
There’s no stopping Maurice Grabowski. The Lynn senior and last year’s runner-up went 41.89 to heap the 100 free gold onto the pile that includes the 50 free, 100 fly and 100 back. He was three tenths up on Colorado Mesa’s Guillaume Guth, who went 42.19.
Third was Camillo Marrugo Montano of Findlay in 42.71. Maksymilian Minichowski of Catawba used outside smoke to rise from eighth in prelims to fourth in 42.83. Volodymyr Gavrysh was fifth in 42.91. Those two switched spots from where they were last year.
In the team title race, Tampa only lost two points to Drury. Tibor Tistan was sixth to check Drury’s Yuri Cabral in seventh. Tampa’s Riccardo Pandin won the B final, a spot up on Lucas Minuer of Drury. Drury had Marwane Sebbata finish 12th to give it a slight edge.

Women’s 200 backstroke
It’s a double double for Agata Naskret, the West Florida senior sweeping backstroke for the second straight year. This time, she reset her national record to 1:52.90, down .35 seconds from the winning time last year. She was more than four seconds clear of the field in a dominant performance.
Tampa’s Sidni Meister was the best of the rest in 1:57.29, a quarter-second up on Grand Valley’s Vittoria Proietti. Meister was the only other holdover from last year’s A final, having finished seventh. Lewis’ Amelia Marsicek edged Lindsey Louder of Tampa by .06 for fourth, though the Trojans solidified their hold on second place.

Men’s 200 backstroke
Drury maximized its return to jump into the lead, a 21-point jump past Tampa. Alvaro Zornoza Quiros went 1:41.20 to take the national title, with teammate Ivan Adamchuk second in 1:42.22. Zornoza Quiros was third last year with Adamchuk winning the title. The Panthers also had Evaldas Babakinas eighth.
Tampa checked the Panthers as best it could. Will Beckstead-Holman was fourth in 1:43.90. Joshua Noll was seventh.
Richard Schmiedenfeld of Colorado Mesa was third. In the race for third place, Indy closed the gap to two points, Nico Basten fifth and Silas Buiessing in ninth.

Women’s 200 breaststroke
Gwen Bergum completed the breaststroke double, no outside smoke required this time. The Drury junior went 2:10.78 to win by nearly a half-second. Much of that came on the final 50, though, Bergum turning for home just .16 up on Colorado Mesa’s Melina Giraudeau and .19 up on Celina Schmidt of Indy. Bergum blasted a 33.75 split coming home to win the race.
Giraudeau was second in 2:11.26. Schmidt faded to third in 2:11.97. It was a gap of more than two seconds to fourth-place Alena Rozova of West Florida in 2:14.33.

Men’s 200 breaststroke
With one event to go, Tampa retakes the team lead. Britton Spann finished fourth, with teammate Cody Ano sixth, their 28 points countering the 16 of Joao Nogueira of Drury for finishing third. The Trojans lead by 7.5 points heading to final relay.
Out front, Jeremias Pock went 4-for-4 in titles, setting the NCAA record of 1:51.12. It downs the ancient NCAA record of Nova Southeastern’s Anton Lobanov set in 2015 at 1:51.71. Pock was second last year in 1:53.04.
Lynn’s Maxim Tsyfarov was second in 1:53.95, .04 up on Nogueira. Colorado Mesa’s Aron Johnsson was fifth, the Mavericks holding a slim five-point edge on Indy for third.

Women’s 1-meter diving
Diving proves decisive in the team race. Colorado Mesa scored four divers, all but guaranteeing itself third place in the team standings. Diving also vaulted West Florida, thanks to eighth-place finisher Olivia Nelson, into fourth, leaping past Drury and Indy for the honor.
On the boards, Clarion dominated again, going 1-3-4-9. Luna Vejarano won her third title in four years to go with a third-place finish in 2024. She scored 496.50, six points up on Colorado Mesa’s Kenya Meyer. Clarion’s Colleen Hudson was third in 487.25, followed by Taelyn Thomas in 483.60 and Kaitlyn Madigan ninth in 442.95.

Women’s 400 freestyle relay
For a third straight year, Nova Southeastern capped the team title with the 400 free relay gold. Zsofia Kurdi, Maxine Egner, Emilia Ronningdal and Maya Esparza went 3:17.37. That downs the NCAA record they set at the conference championships at 3:17.92, and it’s the better part of a second quicker than the old mark, from 2018 and 2019 by Queens at 3:18.04.
Safety was the name of the game for many of the top teams with team placement on the line. Findlay finished second in 3:19.98, two tenths up on Tampa in 3:20.19. Drury followed in 3:20.44, a tenth up on Catawba. West Florida was sixth to seat fourth place. Colorado Mesa came in 12th.

Men’s 400 freestyle relay
Tampa entered the final relay with a 7.5-point cushion. If Drury won the final relay, Tampa would need to be second to hold the title. Any other winner would’ve required Tampa to be within four places of Drury.
The far easier path was to go just win the thing, which Tampa duly obliged.
The Trojans went 2:51.14 to clinch their national title with style. They edged top-seeded Drury by .36 seconds. The squad of Tibor Tistan, Riccardo Pandin, Jacob Hamlin and Nicholas Cavic was ahead of Drury the whole way, with Yuri Cabral’s anchor leg of 42.27 making it interesting late. Lucas Minuer, Matteo Vissotto and Alvaro Zornoza Quiros comprised the Panthers’ squad.
McKendree was third, Volodymyr Gavrysh leading in 42.71 out front. Lynn was third, thanks to Maurice Grabowski’s 41.29 anchor leg that clawed them up from 11th place. Florida Southern was fifth.
Colorado Mesa, up five points, was safely seventh thanks to Guillaume Guth’s 42.17 off the front. Indy was just 11th, not pushing them for third place in the team standings.
