NCAA Division II Championships, Day 4 Prelims: Agata Naskret Chasing More Records
NCAA Division II Championships, Day 4 Prelims: Agata Naskret Chasing More Records
A year ago, as a Colorado Mesa junior, Agata Naskret set the NCAA Division II record in the women’s 100 backstroke.
This year, as a senior at West Florida, she’s lowered it once in-season and once at the meet off the front of the 400 medley relay.
Naskret is chasing another gold medal on Friday at the NCAA Division II Championships, leading the way in prelims of the women’s 100 back by more than a second with a time of 53.16. It’s not the 51.24 she led off the medley relay with, but there’s time for that.
It’s a busy moving day at the Deaconess Aquatic Center in Evansville, Indiana. The night session includes men’s 3-meter diving finals and the 200 freestyle relays.

Women’s 500 freestyle
The champion in the 1,000 free, Justice Beard of Missouri St. Louis, is looking to add another title. (Hers on Wednesday was just the third in school history and the first in the swimming pool.) Beard was the top seed in the morning by going 4:49.30. She rebounded well from an off night in the 200 free, where she entered seeded ninth but ended up at the bottom of the B final.
Nova Southeastern’s Hailey Williams was second in 4:51.93. With she and Emilia Ronningdal in fourth, the Sharks can build on their lead in the team competition. Colorado Mesa has two A finalists, with Olivia Hansson third and Hanna Sasivarevic eighth.

Men’s 500 freestyle
Jacob Hamlin has had a busy week in Evansville. So he may have been playing it coy in prelims by finishing five seconds slower than his seed time. If so, it was a dangerous game, the reigning champion and national record holder skating into the A final in seventh by .38 seconds to get an outside lane.
The Tampa senior will be chasing from that outside lane. He’ll have teammate Barnabas Fluck, the fifth seed, next to him. They’ll be pursuing Swann Plaza, the bronze medalist in the 1,000, who set the pace in 4:20.17. He was a half-second up on Catawba’s Nazar Herashchenko.
In the team race, Drury pushed Matteo Vissotto into the A final in fourth. Tampa has Elliott Weisel 10th. Indy has Jan Schmidt 12th.

Women’s 100 backstroke
Agata Naskret is the swimmer to beat, whatever logo is on her cap. She led the way in 53.16. She had been 51.26 in-season and then 51.24 in Thursday’s medley relay. She won this event last year in 51.52.
Nova Southeastern doesn’t have a backstroker in the top 16, so this is a chance for the chasers to move. Tampa could take advantage, with Sidni Meister second and Lindsay Louder third. Colorado Mesa has Taylar Hooton in the A final in fifth. Indy misses out on a second A finalist, with Valentina Masella eighth but Caroline Reinke 10th.

Men’s 100 backstroke
The 46.21 by Alvaro Zornoza Quiros of Drury in the medley relay was mighty impressive, solidifying his hold on favorite status. Last year’s silver medalist backed it with a 46.24 in prelims. He entered as the co-top seed in 46.14 with someone who’s swimming pretty darn well: Lynn’s Maurice Grabowski. The senior was the third seed in the morning in 46.51. Already the champion in the 50 free and 100 fly, you might not want to bet against him.
In between was Carson-Newman’s Gabriel Morales in 46.38. Drury has a second A finalist in Ivan Adamchuk, who won this event last year but has been off his best this season. Tampa has Rufus Bernhardt and Will Beckstead-Holman in the A final.

Women’s 100 breaststroke
One of the more open races, with none of the top three back from last year, is looking for someone to take control. Prelims offered few hints: .65 seconds separating eight A finalists, then .61 separating eight B finalists. Twenty-five swimmers were within 2.01 seconds of leader Annika Luce of Wingate, who went 1:01.26.
Both of the 1:00 seeds made it back, top seed Celina Schmidt of Indy second in 1:01.34 and second seed Gwen Bergum seventh in 1:01.89. Of eight swimmers with 1:01 seed times, four made the A final, two the B final, and two no second swim at all. Findlay’s Helmi Kakela was third, but teammate Katie Susi was ninth after A finaling last year. Nova Southeastern has an A finalist in Zsofia Kurdi in fourth. Drury has just Bergum, Indy just Schmidt, Tampa only Alicia Souderlind in 14th.

Fresh off her 400 IM triumph, Burlingtyn Bokos is after another gold in the 200 fly. She led the way in prelims in 200.27, but it promises to be a tight one at night. Five swimmers broke 2:01 in the morning, and four of them have gone sub-2 minutes this season.
Second was Drury’s Maria Fe Munoz in 2:00.40, .06 ahead of Viktoriia Kostromina of Nova Southeastern. Delta State’s Janne Bodemer was fourth. The top seed entering the meet, Emily Mears-Bentley of Findlay, was fifth in 200.96.
