NC State’s Fast Relay Ends Nike Cup

North Carolina State made sure that the Nike Cup ended with a bang.

The Wolfpack’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of Ryan Held, Simonas Bilis, Joe Bonk and Andreas Schiellerup won the event by over five seconds. The team went a 2:50.94, an NCAA ‘A’ time standard.

The day started off with swimming’s marathon event: the 1650-yard freestyle. Eva Fabian of Yale took the women’s title, swimming the race in 16:17.09. Fabian finished under two-tenths of a second ahead of Cailley Silbert, her Bulldog teammate. On the men’s side, North Carolina State’s Anton Ipsen won the race by 15 seconds, posting a time of 14:52.00.

Duke’s Maddie Hess brought home the women’s 200-yard backstroke title with a time of 1:55.14. Nic Graesser of North Carolina won the men’s event in 1:46.41.

North Carolina State’s Alexia Zevnik out-touched teammate Riki Bonnema in the women’s 100-yard freestyle. Zevnik posted a time of 48.60. Held won the event on the men’s side, touching in at 42.94.

After sweeping the 100-yard freestyle, the Wolfpack continued to roll in the women’s 200-yard breaststroke. North Carolina State’s Kayla Brumbaum won the event in 2:10.62, three seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Navy’s Marlin Brutkiewicz won the men’s event in 1:56.66.

Duke’s Isa Paez won the women’s 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:56.14. On the men’s side, North Carolina State’s Christian McCurdy brought home first place in 1:42.61.

North Carolina State brought home first place in the women’s 400-yard freestyle. The team was made up of Natalie Labonge, Zevnik, Krista Duffield and Bonnema and went a 3:14.39.

Duke won the meet on the men’s side. The Blue Devils finished with 1721 points. North Carolina State was in second and North Carolina was in third.

North Carolina took the women’s championship with 1815 points. Duke finished in second and Yale was third.

The meet was held at Koury Natatorium, North Carolina’s pool.
