NC State Swimming Wins 2015 All-North Carolina Invitational

NC State Swimming swept the men’s and women’s titles in the 2015 All-North Carolina Invitational.

Winning by more than a 300-point margin on both sides, the NC State swimming and diving team earned its fourth-straight win at the All-NC Invitational Saturday inside Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Collectively, the Wolfpack men and women won 26 of the 40 events contested and earned 17 meet records on the weekend.

The men’s squad finished first with 1,713 points while East Carolina and Davidson rounded out the top three in the overall standings with 1,314.5 and 977 points, respectively.

The women tallied 1,688 points while East Carolina and Davidson also rounded out the top three in the women’s overall standings with 1,343 and 946 points, in respective order.

Holloway’s Statement
“We had two good team wins for both the men and women at our fourth-annual All-NC Invite. We had a lot of fun and energy on deck again today- there aren’t many times that you have the entire team together at once and it was nice having everyone together and supporting each other,” said head coach Braden Holloway.

“We had some freshmen step up in their first collegiate meet and get their first meet records and first collegiate wins. As always we had some leadership from our upperclassmen and overall was a good start to the season for us. We have some areas we need to improve on, and will get back to work Monday to prepare for our next meet.”

Wolfpack Relays
The Pack earned a one, two finish in the women’s and men’s 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

On the women’s side the squad of Ashlyn Koletic, Kayla Brumbaum, Krista Duffield and Natalie Labonge set a meet record to win the event after stopping the clock at 1:41.48, while the team of Alexia Zevnik, Payton Schrum, Riki Bonnema and Lotta Nevalainen placed second after notching a mark of 1:45.26.

The men’s group of Hennessey Stuart, Daniel Graber, Soren Dahl and Simonas Bilis posted a meet record time of 1:29.84 to finish first, while the quartet of Andreas Schiellerup, Quinlan Stuart, Jason Deana and Joe Bonk took second with a mark of 1:30.92.

The women’s 400 free relay the team of Nevalainen, Zevnik, Bonnema and Courtney Caldwell won the event with a meet record time of 3:21.32, while the squad of Labonge, Koletic, Duffield and Christine Kerr notched a mark of 3:22.85.

From the men’s side, Scott Johnson, Justin Ress, Dahl and Bilis also set a meet record in the men’s 400 free relay with a time of 2:57.63 to take the top honor, while Deana, Schiellerup, Bonk and Held placed second after touching the wall in 2:59.13.

Individual Medley
In the women’s 400 individual medley, freshman Lindsay Morrow placed second in the event with a mark of 4:28.03.

Anton Ipsen won the men’s 400 IM as he posted a meet record time of 3:56.82, while senior Austin Snyder and junior Adam Linker finished third and fourth with marks of 4:01.34 and 4:05.96, in respective order.

The Wolfpack women rounded out the top five in the 100 IM. Koletic placed first with a mark of 57.13, followed by Zevnik (57.14), Brumbaum (58.41), Bonnema (58.45) and Duffield (59.50), respectively.

In the men’s 100 IM, Dahl posted a time of 49.99 to finish second in the event. Held, Bilis and Christian McCurdy rounded out the top five of the event as Held posted a mark of 50.28, Bilis a time of 50.36 and McCurdy stopped the clock at 51.10.

Butterfly
Junior Natalie Labonge took the top honor in the women’s 100 butterfly, as she posted a time of 56.24, while senior Mariah Hamil finished third in the event with a mark of 57.07.

On the men’s side the Pack swept the podium in the 100 fly as Dahl finished first with a meet record time of 48.33, while Bilis and Deana rounded out the top three of the event with marks of 49.18 and 49.88, respectively.

In the women’s 200 fly freshman Morgan Carr finished second after touching the wall in 2:05.46.

Snyder, James Bretscher and Jon Burkett on the men’s side placed second, third and fourth after posting times of 1:51.35, 1:53.25 and 1:53.34, in respective order.

Freestyle Watch
In the women’s 200 freestyle, Kristin Connors posted a meet record after stopping the clock at 1:51.46 to finish first while Zevnik narrowly finished behind her teammate in second place with a time of 1:51.69.

Ryan Held and Justin Ress finished second and third in the men’s 200 free, as Held swam a time of 1:37.52 to earn a NCAA ‘B’ standard mark and Ress touched the wall in 1:38.04.

Freshman Allison Fogleman finished first in the women’s 1,650 freestyle to mark the first win of her collegiate career as she posted a time of 17:20.61.

On the men’s side Mason Revis and Alexander Hamilton finished third and fourth in the 1,650 free with times of 16:20.00 and 16:24.75, in respective order.

In the women’s 100 free, Rachel Muller, Emmie Barnhill and Kristin Connors finished second, third and fourth in the event. Muller notched a mark of 51.75 while Barnhill recorded a time of 51.97 and Connors stopped the clock at 52.13.

Junior transfer Bonk earned his first individual win with the Wolfpack, as he posted a meet record time of 44.84 to win the men’s 100 free. Johnson finished third in the event with a mark of 45.43.

Breaststroke
Newcomers Patrik Schwarzenbach, Graber and Quinlan Stuart finished second and fourth in the men’s 100 breaststroke as they posted times of 57.07, 57.47 and 58.71, respectively.

Maddie Wiztke finished fifth in the women’s 100 breaststroke after touching the wall in 1:05.67.

In the 200 breast, Schwarzenbach finished third with a time of 2:04.86 and Derek Hren finished fourth with a mark of 2:05.03.

Backstroke
In the women’s 100 backstroke, Koletic and Caldwell earned a one, two finish, as Koletic notched a meet record and NCAA ‘B’ standard time of 54.83 while Caldwell touched the wall in 55.86.

Hennessey Stuart tabbed a first-place finish in the men’s 100 back as he finished in 48.80 to mark a meet record.

Lindsay Morrow won her second individual event of the weekend as she posted a meet record time of 2:00.91 in the 200 back.

Jacob Siar, Ryan WIlkinson and Schiellerup swept the podium in the men’s 200 back as Siar tabbed a first-place finish with a time of 1:49.88 and Wilkinson posted marks of 1:50.37 and 1:50.55 to round out the top three, respectively.

Springboard Action
In the women’s three-meter dive, Rachel Mumma earned her second first-place finish of the weekend as she notched a six-dive score of 246.00.

East Carolina Press Release:

The East Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each took second place at the season-opening All-North Carolina Invitational at the Greensboro Aquatic Center Saturday.

The men earned 1314.5 points and the women scored 1343 points as NC State claimed both titles with 1713 and 1688 points, respectively, in the fourth annual event. It was the fourth consecutive runner-up finish for the ECU women and third straight second-place finish for its men.

The ECU women’s team posted a pair of individual victories as sophomore Vendela Norrman won the 200-yard breaststroke and senior Bailie Monahan touched first in the 200-yard butterfly. Monahan also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly, missing out on the stroke sweep by 0.57. Senior Megan Sellers nearly gave ECU a sweep of the breaststroke events finishing 0.06 out of first-place in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Ashley Sams and Zoe Feingold placed second and third, respectively, in the women’s 3-meter diving competition.

On the men’s side, senior Michael Dugan claimed second-place in the 1650-yard freestyle, finishing 0:00.08 out of first place, for the Pirates’ only individual medal swim.

ECU swept the medal stand in the 1-meter springboard competition with Scottie Kent (251.50) edging out teammate Matt Mullen (250.78) by 1.28 points for first-place. Zach Duval finished in third with 231.23 points.

Davidson Press Release:

The Davidson swimming and diving program put together a strong season-opening performance as both squads finished third at the fourth annual All-NC Invitational Saturday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

The Wildcats completed the final day of competition with 20 top-10 performances with nine finishing in the top five.

RECAP – EVENING SESSION

The final day capped off with the last seven events starting at 5 p.m.

Both teams kept the momentum going from the morning and totaled 10 top-10 performances with six from the women and four from the men.

Katy Williams led Davidson with the top performance, a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:22.18. Luke Burton led the men with a fourth-place showing in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:51.04.

Both 400 freestyle relay squad finished fourth. Jake Perron, Clay Resweber, Cameron Bard and Burton put together a time of 3:06.99, while Elise Lankiewicz, Kassie Shannon, Erica Clancy and Angie Healy recorded a time of 3:32.50.

Burton also added a ninth-place finish in the 100 IM, while Lankiewicz took seventh for the women.

RECAP – MORNING SESSION

The final day began this morning with the first seven events starting at 10 a.m.

Both teams put together another impressive performance as they totaled 10 top-10 showings with five from each squad in the first session.

The women were led by Elise Lankiewicz and Katy Williams who placed third in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, respectfully. Lankiewicz swam a time of 1:51.80, while Williams touched the wall at the 1:05.31 mark.

Lankiewicz and Williams also helped the 200 medley relay squad to a fifth-place finish with a time of 1:48.42. Lauren Malachowski and Kassie Shannon completed the quartet, swimming the first and final legs, respectfully.

Freshman Anabelle Durham posted a time of 59.09 in the 100 backstroke to record her first top-10 performance of her collegiate career.

For the men, Luke Burton recorded the top performance for the second-straight day. The senior placed second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.25.

Grant Smith and Clay Resweber joined Burton in the top-10 showings. Smith took seventh in the 400 IM (4:11.52) and Resweber took eighth and ninth in the 1650 freestyle and 200 freestyle events, respectfully.

Smith and Burton joined Cameron Bard and Ari Snyder in the 200 medley relay and put together a time of 1:35.73 which was good for sixth place.

After putting together impressive morning performances the Wildcats sat third on the women’s side and fourth for the men heading into the evening.

The Wildcats will jump back into the pool Friday, Oct. 16 for a two-day event at the University of Richmond for a quad-meet that features Duquesne and George Mason.

Queens Press Release:

The Queens University of Charlotte women’s swim team combined for fourth place overall in the All-NC Invite despite just competing one day. Although the Royals only took part in the two day meet on Saturday, October 3, 2015, the team tallied a combined score of 867 with the help of three first place finishes.

North Carolina State would lead the meet with 1688 points followed by East Carolina with 1343 points. Davidson took third in the meet with 946 points for the weekend.

Patricia Castro-Ortega topped the competition taking the fastest time in the women’s 400 Yard Individual Medley (IM) with a 4:21.44. Amanda Tipton would follow Castro-Ortega taking the fourth fastest time with a 4:31.74.

Later that night, Castro-Ortega took a first place finish in the 100 Yard Freestyle. She would grab a 51.08 for the race. Kyrie Dobson touched for fifth place in the race with a 52.14 time.

The Royals found another first place finish as Shelly Prayson topped the pool with a 1:04.78 in the 100 Yard Breaststroke. Brittney Phelan touched the wall with a 1:05.57 to take the fourth place in the race.

The women’s 200 Yard Medley Relay took the top division II finish falling behind two North Carolina State teams and an Eastern Carolina team. The Royal’s squad of Caroline Arakelian, Phelan, Josephina Lord-Taylor, and Dobson, respectively, took the fourth place finish with a 1:47.21. Queens would have another relay finish in the top 10 for the event as Amanda Tipton, Sude Ozgen, Stevens, and Shane Knight took eight place with a 1:48.88.

The team concluded the night with a third place finish in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. Castro-Ortega, Arakelian, Dobson, and Knight combined for a 3:29.48 time. The Royals second relay featuring, Lord-Taylor, Hannah Craig, Braelyn Tracy, and McKenzie Stevens, took seventh with a 3:38.92.

The Royals saw success in several other races as two Queens’ swimmers placed in the top three for the 200 Yard IM as Arakelian grabbed second and Tipton third for the race. Arakelian touched with a 2:01.45 and Tipton touched with a 2:06.32 to lead the team.

Arakelian also led the Royals in the 200 Yard Freestyle. She found the wall in 1:52.36 for fifth place. She would later place third in the 100 Yard Backstroke finding the wall in a 57.18. Tipton would take ninth in the race with a 59.11.

Queens saw back-to-back finishes in the Women’s 100 Yard Butterfly as McKenzie Stevens found fifth place and Josephina Lord-Taylor found sixth. Stevens would clock a 57.60 as Lord-Taylor clocked a 57.71.

Kathryn Johnston led the team in the 1650 Yard Freestyle as she finished the mile long race with a 17:45.14 for fifth place. Hannah Craig took 10th overall with an 18:15.28 finish.
In the 200 Yard Butterfly Lord-Taylor grabbed a fourth place finish going 2:05.57 with Stevens taking fifth with a 2:05.78.

Prayson took eighth for Queens in the 100 IM with a 1:00.85. She would later in the meet take a sixth place finish in the 200 Yard Breaststroke (2:24.08) which would follow Phelan who led the team with a third overall finish with a 2:22.54.

Queens will take to the lanes again on October 23 as the team battles Florida State and Duke University in Durham, N.C.

The Queens University of Charlotte men’s swim team took fifth overall in the All-NC Invite on Saturday, October 3, 2015. Despite just participating in the second half of the competition, the Royals secured 918 points topping the Division II schools in attendance as four races fell to Queens.

North Carolina State University would claim the meet with 1713 points. East Carolina University tallied 1314.5 in the meet with Davidson College securing third place with 977 points.

The Royals found four first place finishes with Dion Dreesens starting the Royals off in the 200 Yard Freestyle. Dreesens topped the competition seeing his way to a 1:36.58 touch. Parker Cook-Weeks found his way to an eight place finish for the event, clocking a 1:44.08.

In another first place finish for the Royals, Rostyslav Fedyna topped the pool for the 100 Yard Breaststroke. Fedyna took a 55.24 time for the event. Devyn Hughes, Inigo Alarcia, and Ben Mayes also placed within the top 10 as Hughes touched with a 58.73 for a fifth place finish. Alarcia touched right behind him for a sixth place finish with a 59.12 as Mayes clocked a 59.60 for a 10th place touch.

Nicholas Arakelian found a first place finish in the 1650 Yard Freestyle as he dominantly took a 15:55.16 for the race. He proceed this with a second place finish in the 400 Yard Individual Medley (IM) finding his way to the wall taking a 3:56.88.

It was a 1-2 finish for Queens as they topped the 200 Yard Breaststroke. Arakelian led with a 2:03.33 for first place. Fedyna would touch the wall in 2:04.17 to take second place.

On the men’s side of the 200 Yard Medley Relay, the Royals placed two teams inside the top five finishes. Grabbing the third overall finish for the event, Zachary Phelps, Fedyna, Alarcia, and Ben Taylor powered to the wall for a 1:33.13. The second Royals’ relay took the fifth place finish as Mitchell Harwood, Hughes, Enzo Pazos, and Ben Mayes captured a 1:35.44 time.

The men concluded the day with the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. Dreesens, Fedyna, Taylor, and Mayes combined for third place with a 3:03.25. Touching for seventh place with a 3:08.75 finish was the Royals second relay team featuring Cook-Weeks, Harwood, Phelps, and Arakelian.

Queens showed their talent in several other races as Dreesens, competing in the 100 Yard Freestyle, took second in the event touching the wall with a 45.30. Mayes clocked a 46.23 in the race to finish sixth.

Hector Tricas would find the wall in 4:09.30 for the sixth place finish in the 400 Yard IM. Inigo Alarcia took a 4:13.37 for a tenth place finish.

The 100 Yard Butterfly found Devyn Hughes placing in the top 10 as he took a 52.43 for eighth place. Zachary Phelps would take seventh place in the 100 Backstroke to lead the team with a 51.88.

Fedyna grabbed seventh in the 100 IM with a 52.50 as Mayes took 10th for the event with a 53.59. Hughes would touch right behind him for 11th place and a 54.25 touch.

Arakelian touched for sixth place in the 200 Yard IM. He would finish with a 1:52.30 time.

Tricas was the lone Royal to place in the top 10 for the 200 Yard Butterfly, touching the wall with a 1:54.24 for fifth place.

Also swimming in the meet was Matthew Josa who competed unattached. Josa grabbed first place in the 100 Yard IM with a 49.03. In the 200 Yard Butterfly, Josa topped the competition again this time taking a 1:47.07 for the race.

Queens will take to the lanes again on October 23 as the team battles Florida State and Duke University in Durham, N.C.

Campbell Press Release:

Campbell finished the 2015 All-North Carolina Invitational fifth in the team standings.

North Carolina State took the team title with 1,688 points, followed by East Carolina with 1,343. Davidson (946) and Queens (867) finished just ahead of Campbell (831). Gardner-Webb (803), UNC Asheville (747), Lenoir Rhyne (268), Catawba (220), St. Andrews (211) and North Carolina A&T (173) rounded out team scoring.

Geena Squartino turned in an 18:02.06 in the 1650 free, good for seventh. Karah Sizemore posted a time of 2:07.33 in the 200 back to take seventh on the day.

Sarah Jabusch took ninth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:37.95, followed by Sizemore’s 4:38.63.

In the 100 fly, Michelle Case placed ninth with a 57.96. Case also took 12th in the 200 free with a time of 1:57.26. In the 200 fly, Case took ninth with a 2:07.84. The sophomore’s 52.94 placed her 10th in the 100 free.

Alice Rigback placed 13th in the 100 IM with a 1:02.79.

Campbell also tied Gardner-Webb for 10th in the 400 free relay with a 3:40.35.

Gardner-Webb Press Release:

Gardner-Webb’s men finished fourth and the GWU women finished sixth at the 2015 All-North Carolina Invitational, as the two-day event came to an end on Saturday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

The two teams combined for 18 top-10 finishes and had 65 finishes that resulted in team points in Saturday’s grueling schedule – which started at 10 am and wrapped up after 8:00 pm.

Coach Mike Simpson’s men had 958 points, just 19 points behind third-place Davidson. The women finished with 803 points, which was only 28 points shy of fifth-place Campbell.

The Gardner-Webb women got points from two of its relay teams in the 200 medley to start the day, with the “A” team of Lili Toth, Whitney Peters, Georgie Graves and Kelsey Williams finishing sixth (1:48.42) and the “B” squad of Taylor Schartz, Anna Banick, Tessa Walsh and Caroline Andrews taking 13th (1:52.58).

The Gardner-Webb men’s “A” squad was whistled for an early start in the 200 medley, but the “B” team of John Baker, Fred Simons IV, Andrew Knudsen and Andrew Linzie finished eighth (1:37.86).

London Schumacher got off to a great start individually, finishing third in the women’s 400 IM with a time of 4:29.31. She also had a 10th-place finish in the 200 fly (2:08.50).

Graves followed with a a fourth-place finish in the women’s 100 fly, touching in 57:23 seconds – and Nathan Lile matched that finish himself in the ensuing men’s race, finishing fourth in a time of 50:66.

Lile also had a fourth-place finish in the men’s 100 free, posting a time of 45.52 in the afternoon session.

The 1650 free events wrapped up the morning session, and Gardner-Webb’s women got a pair of top-10 performances – as Lauren Oglesby finished third (17:32.33) and Morgan Vanderschaaf finished eighth (18:02.30).

Peter Wakely and Luke Denman followed suit on the men’s side, with Wakely finishing fifth (16:26.91) and Denman taking seventh (16:36.84).

Toth posted a pair of top-10 results in the breast stroke individually on Satrurday, taking eighth in the 100 breast (1:07.03) and ninth in the women’s 200 breast (2:25.88). On the men’s side, Austin Toney finished 10th in the 200 breast with a time of 2:11.50.

Connor Bos was just as effective in the backstroke on the men’s side, touching in ninth place in the 100 back (52.03) and finishing 10th in the 200 back (1:55.92).

UNC Asheville Press Release:

The UNC Asheville women’s swimming team saw a second consecutive day of great individual performances on Saturday at the All-North Carolina Invitational as the Bulldogs totaled 747 points over the two days and finished seventh overall.

NOTABLES
-The 400 Free Relay team finished in sixth place with a time of 3:35.02 – just three seconds off of the program record (Rulevich – 52.73, van Dorsten – 52.83, Woolfe – 54.88, Sanchez – 54.57).

-In the 200 Free, Ale Sanchez finished with a time of 1:56.41.

-Morgan Rulevich finished ninth in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:07.96.

-In the 100 Backstroke, Sanchez finished 10th (59.48) and Jessica Woolfe was 13th (1:00.09).

-Galen Broido turned in a time of 17:31.51 in the mile to finish second, while teammate Allie Snyder’s time of 18:11.94 placed her ninth.

-In the 100 IM, a new NCAA event, Rulevich finished ninth with a time of 1:01.17 and Woolfe finished with a time of 1:02.83 and finished 14th.

-Rulevich’s 200 Breaststroke time of 2:24.08 gave the freshman a fifth place finish.

-The Bulldogs’ ‘A’ Free Relay team posted a time of 3:35.02, just three seconds off the program record. Rulevich led off the relay with a time of 52.74, just a half second off of the program record.

Catawba Press Release:

Catawba closed out its opening weekend of swim competition on Saturday in the All-NC Invite at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The women finished ninth among 11 teams with 220 points. The men were eighth with a total of 435.5 points.

The women got a school record swim from Nadine Brockmann in the 100 IM and two top five all-time swims from freshman Marcia-Mariel Erhart. Brockmann posted a time of 1:04.02 in the 100 IM, a distance that has not been a normal event since the previous mark was set in 2003.

Erhart’s time in the 1650 free (17:53.76) was the fifth best time in school history and put her sixth at the meet. She would swim a time of 2:14.13 in the 100 fly to place 23rd in the fourth best time on the all-time charts.

Both were members of the 200 medley relay team that finished 17th (1:55.68) and the 400 free relay team that was 14th (3:47.39). Amy Cujas also swam both relays with Palmer Benson swimming in the 200 medley and Paula Garcia the 400 IM.

Individually, Brockman, who was 22nd in the 100 IM, finished 17th in the 200 free (1:58.76) and 23rd in the 100 free (54.87). Cujas went 32nd in the 100 fly (1:03.29) and 29th in the 100 back (1:03.74). Benson placed 29th in the 400 IM (5:07.50), 32nd in the 100 breast (1:14.50) and 31st in the 200 breast (2:41.39). Garcia was 28th in the 200 back (2:10.70).

On the men’s side, freshman Aly Hegazi posted a pair of top 10 finishes and Jevgenij Gamper placed ninth in the 100 breast (59.51). Hegazi was ninth in the 1650 free (17:00.23) and 10th in the 200 free (1:45.34). Hegazi also swam the 100 free (48.47) to finish 17th, while Gamper was 17th in the 200 breast (2:16.75).

Rafal Baran took 16th in the 400 IM (4:19.53) and was 14th in the 200 fly (1:59.07). Also in the 200 fly, Michael King was 15th (1:59.93) and Dominik Brus (16th (1:59.98). Brus went 19th in the 100 back (55.19), 20th in the 100 fly (53.95) and 28th in the 200 back (2:05.09).

Brus, Gamper, King and Hegazi opened the day for the men with an 11th place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:40.71). Gamper, Baran, King and Ethan Davis were 14th in the 400 free relay (3:23.75).
