Women’s 100 Free

NCAA Record: 48.98 – Kendra Stern, Amherst (2010)
2016 Champion49.90 – Hannah Lobb, Kenyon

Despite a charging Emma Waddell in the end, Emory’s Fiona Muir earned her first national championship title this week after finishing second in both the 50 and 200 freestyle earlier. The only swimmer out under 24, Muir had enough to hold on in the end and earn top honors this time around.

Waddell earned a close second place in 49.45, while Calvin’s Abby VanHarn and Trinity’s Lindsay Hagmann tied for third in 50.38. This was an improvement on VanHarn’s fifth place finish and Hagmann’s seventh-place finish in this event from last year.

Emory took the next two spots with Marissa Bergh (50.60) and Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe (50.77).

Men’s 100 Free

NCAA Record: 43.16 – Zach Turk, Kenyon (2012)
2016 Champion: 43.41 – Thomas Thetford, Washington & Lee

Despite leading the race for about 95 yards, Keene State senior Ryan Boraski fell to second in the 100 free tonight after finishing third last year and third in both the 50 and 200 free earlier on this week. Rowan senior Jesse Novak earned back his title in this event from 2015 by splitting a blistering 21.90 in the second 50. His time of 43.29 was a lifetime best and just off legendary Zach Turk‘s NCAA record by one tenth of a second.

Oliver Smith of Emory was out with Boraski but also fell off on the second 50, splitting the exact same 22.96 as Boraski. Nonetheless, Smith scored valuable points for Emory headed into two great events for the Eagles, essentially solidifying their team victory.

Rounding out the senior foursome was Ian Garin of UC Santa Cruz taking fourth in 44.27. This was huge improvement on Garin’s 27th place finish in this event last year and was his second All-American swim this week.
