Molly Webber Program Record Helps Army Split with Penn State
Molly Webber went 1:45.98 in the women’s 200 freestyle, lowering the program record for the second straight week as Army split a two-day meet with Penn State
Army’s women’s team claimed a 170-125 win. The Penn State men prevailed in West Point, 169-130.
Webber started the meet on the winning 200 medley relay, with Angie McKane, Catriona Gilmore and Sydney Braeger. Webber also won the 500 free in 4:48.25, and she helped the team of McKane, Kira MacMullan and Grace Wagner win the 400 free relay in 3:21.89.
Gilmore went 1:00.95 to win the 100 breast and 213.42 to claim the 200 breast. She was also second in the 200 individual medley. Braeger’s time of 2:00.08 won the 200 fly ahead of Cora Webber, then Braeger was second to the winning time of 52.62 from McKane in the 100 fly. McKane won the 50 free in 22.81. Layne Peterson claimed the 200 back for the Black Knights.
Penn State got a win from Morgan Moore in the 1,000 free. She was second to Webber in the 500. Margaret Markvardt (100 back), Catherine Meisner (100 free) and Julia Barto (200 IM) added wins for Penn State. The Nittany Lions’ Kailey Koval wept the diving events.
Penn State rode its big guns on the men’s side. Eduardo Cisternas’ second win of the meet – a 4:20.94 in the 500 free – keyed a 1-2-3 sweep that effectively put the meet away. Cisternas won the 1,000 free.
Mariano Lazzerini did the breaststroke double, in 51.52 (ahead of Army’s Kohen Rankin) and 1:53.94. Second in the latter was Vicente Villanueva, who went on to win the 200 IM in 1:48.33. Lazzerini joined Matthew Bittner, Cooper Morley and Tylor Kim in edging Army’s 200 medley relay by three tenths in 1:24.37. Lazzerini, Bittner, Kim and Rylan Anselm won the 400 free relay in 2:35.18, seventh tenths up on the Black Knights.
Bittner won the 100 fly. Kim’s 20.09 won the 50 free, then he claimed the 100 free in 43.31. Morley was second in both backstrokes. Anselm finished second in the 200 free. Alexander Reese and Jack Olivier went 1-2 on 1-meter diving.
There were plenty of battles on the men’s side. Thomas Hadji of Army won the 200 free in 1:35.96, .03 up on Anselm. Hadji was second in the 100 free by .22 seconds and third in the 50.
Johnny Crush won both backstroke events in 45.41 and 1:44.23. Daniel Verdolaga won the 200 fly in 1:48.84 and was second in the 100 fly. Jack McDaniel picked up a win on 3-meter diving.
