Minna Atherton Among Top Swimming at 2015 Australia State Teams Challenge

Queensland has wrapped up the 2015 State Teams Challenge at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra after a thrilling final session last night.

The Maroons amassed 2,138.50 pts to defend their title ahead of NSW (1827), Victoria (1605), WA (1285), SA (922.50) TAS (217) and NT (135).

QLD also won the champion female team while NSW won the champion male team.

The 16-17 years male pointscore went to NSW and the 15-16 female pointscore went to QLD, who also won the 13-14 years male and female pointscores.

Australian World Juniors representative Matthew Wilson from NSW won the 16-17 years Boys Swimmer of the Meet; Dual World Junior champion Minna Atherton won the 16-17 years Girls Swimmer of the Meet; WA’s Ethan McAleese the 14-15 years Boys Swimmer of the Meet while QLD’s Kaylee McKeown won the 13-14 girls Swimmer of the Meet.

The meet lived up to its reputation of being one of the major highlights of the National Age swimming calendar with every State digging deep to produce four sessions of great racing and a host of meet records and personal best times.

Queensland led the way with a host of stand-out performers including meet records to:

Atherton set new meet records in the 50m backstroke 26.83; 100m backstroke 57.88 and 200m backstroke 2:06.38; Shayna Jack 50m freestyle 24.86 ; Gemma Cooney 100m butterfly 59.05; Calypso Sheridan 200m breaststroke 2:26.29 all in the 15-16 years girls.

McKeown 50m backstroke 27.74; 100m backstroke 59.42 200m backstroke 2:07.70 and Laticia Transom 200m freestyle 1:59.67 in the 13-14 years.

While for NSW it was Wilson who flew the flag for the Blues and claimed three meet records; the 50m breaststroke 28.10; 100m breaststroke 1:00.80 and 200m breaststroke 2:11.23 in the 16-17s as did his team mate Leon MacAlister in the 14-15 years in the 50m backstroke 25.16; 100m backstroke 54.43 and 200m backstroke 1:58.60 on his way to six wins which also included the 50, 100 and 200m freestyle; Braga Verhage (WA) also set a new meet record of 23.47 in the 16-17 years 50m butterfly.
