Milou van Wijk Among The Winners As Dutch s/c Championships Get Underway

Milou van Wijk won the women’s 100 free as 13 qualification times for the continental showcase in December were swum at the Dutch Short Course Championships in Rotterdam.

Van Wijk, who led off the Dutch 4×1 quartet who won bronze at the World Championships in Singapore, was the only woman inside 53secs in 52.52 to go well inside the 53.78 QT. Freya Anderson of Great Britain was next home in 53.05 with Yara van Kalmthout also staking her claim in 53.48.

The short-course Europeans take place in Lublin, Poland, in December with Tessa Giele booking two slots with a 30.17 effort in the 50 breaststroke and second in the 50 fly in 25.45 behind winner Maaike de Waard (25.22).

Brandon van den Berg went 46.97 in the men’s 100 free followed by Sean Niewold (47.11) followed home by Duncan Scott (47.26) and Josha Salchow (47.64) with Merlin Belmon’s 47.94 enough to book a slot on the plane.

Jason van den Berg made it a golden evening for the Van Den Berg siblings when he won the 50 breast in 26.12 – within the QT – followed by Koen de Groot (26.16) with Arno Kamminga – now based in Hong Kong – back in Dutch competition and inside the QT in 26.30.

Tiago Gomes took the men’s 800 free in 7:48.09 with Marte Hieke van der Kamp inside the women’s QT in 8:26.83.

Britain’s Katie Shanahan enjoyed double gold in the 200 back (2:04.56) and 200IM (2:07.77).
