Marist Boys, Blessed Trinity Girls Secure Georgia 4-5A State Championship Crowns

The 2020 Georgia 4-5A State Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga.

On the boys’ side, Marist used their impressive depth to handily win the team title with 370 points. It was a tighter team race on the girls’ side as Blessed Trinity came out victorious with a final score of 276.

BOYS MEET

Top 3 Team Scores:

The boy’s meet began as Starr’s Mill’s Seth Roach (23.73), Ben Phifer (25.24), Michael Tucker (22.44), and Samin Sayani (22.93) won the opening 4×50 medley relay in 1:35.94, 1.5 seconds ahead of runner-up Marist (1:35.86). Roach later won the 100 fly in 50.99.

Oconee County’s Ryan Wylie, who has verbally committed to Georgia, cruised to first in the 200 free with a final time of 1:39.11 as the only swimmer in the field under the 1:40 barrier. The junior later won the 500 free in 4:31.37, nine seconds ahead of the field and nearly seven seconds faster than his prelims swim.

Harvard commit and Marist senior Quinn Harron dominated the 200 IM, winning by nearly five seconds in 1:48.59 as the only athlete in the race to crack the 1:50 marker. Shortly after, he was back in the pool to earn another gold medal after getting his hands to the wall first in the 100 breast with a time of 54.21.

Henry Nicols of WWAc splashed-and-dashed his way to the top of the podium in the 50 free, just sneaking under the 21-second mark in a final time of 20.99 to edge out Riverwood’s Thomas Shannon (21.06). Oconee County’s Allen Mann dove to the top spot on the 1-meter board, posting an impressive final score of 641.15 to win the event by well over 100 points.

North Springs’ Arie Voloschin sprinted his way to first place in the 100 free, shaving almost a half-second off his prelims time to earn the state title in a final time of 45.25. Druid Hills’ Idris Muhammad powered home to a win in the 100 back, touching the wall in 49.91 to win by two seconds as the only athlete under the 50-second mark.

Oconee County’s Eli Searcy (22.72), Scott Seuser (23.11), Spencer Cohen (22.62), and Wylie (20.94) won the 4×50 free relay in 1:29.39, just edging out runner-up Marist (1:29.48). Starr’s Mill’s Tucker (46.83), Roach (46.70), Sayani (51.99), and Phifer (47.85) concluded the meet by winning the 4×100 free relay in 3:13.37, just ahead of Marist (3:13.41).

GIRLS MEET

The girls’ meet began as Chamblee’s Kyla Maloney (25.63), Mary Adam (31.06), Evelyn Entrekin (26.61), and Sophie Bell (25.07) won the opening 4×50 medley relay in 1:48.37, just ahead of runner-up Marist (1:48.91). Maloney later went on to win the 100 back in 54.57.

North Oconee’s Karen Zhao powered home to the gold medal in the 200 free for the second-straight season, winning by nearly two seconds in 1:50.31. After taking second in the 100 free last year, Zhao then went on to claim her second gold medal of the day in the 100 free in a quick time of 50.93.

Buford’s Caroline Irwin successfully defended her state title in the 50 free, stopping the clock in a swift 23.79 as the only swimmer in the event to dip under the 24-second barrier. St. Pius X’s Julia Herring posted a 60-point dominant win on the 1-meter board after finishing with a total score of 593.25.

Oconee County sophomore Olivia DellaTorre led the 200 IM from start to finish, clocking in a 2:04.04 for a five-second victory over runner-up Hally Laney (2:09.08) of Decatur. DellaTorre soon dove back in the pool to pick up another gold medal in the 100 fly, finishing in 54.06 ahead of silver medalist Irwin (55.95).

Clarke Central’s Lucy Yeomans cruised to first in the 500 free, knocking off five seconds from her prelims time to win in 5:00.66 – 10 seconds ahead of the field. Starr’s Mill’s Lauren Presley earned the 100 breast gold medal for the second-consecutive season, getting her hands to the wall first in 1:04.99.

Oconee County’s Ella Freeman (25.20), Campbell Ball (25.40), Addie Hayes (25.54), and Della Torre won the 4×50 free relay in 1:39.86. Blessed Trinity’s Rachel Saxon (54.61), Amelia Cooper (54.78), Maggie Pokorny (53.68), and Gracce Findlay (53.31) won the 4×100 free relay in 3:36.38.
