Marie Schobel, Madison Murtagh Celebrate Penn State Senior Day Sweep

Penn State seniors Madison Murtagh and Marie Schobel won twice each as Penn State eased to victories over in-state foe Villanova on Friday night.

The women won by a 202-91, while the men coasted, 215-81 as the teams celebrated a total of 17 seniors between the squads.

Murtagh won the 1,000 freestyle by nearly 16 seconds over Villanova’s Nicole Welch. She was three second quicker than Welch in the 500 free.

Schobel capped her backstroke domination by taking the 100 and 200 with ease. Kylie Rydland added a breaststroke sweep for the Nittany Lions. Abby Amdor was second to teammate Maddie Cooke in the 50 free then won the 100 free ahead of teammate Shelby Kahn, who was victorious in the 200 free. Senior Sierra Shurts swept diving, and Morgan Rinn (200 fly) and Ellie Brandbergh (100 fly) added wins.

Villanova’s lone win came via Kelly Montesi in the 200 individual medley (2:02.85). She was second to Schobel in the 200 back and third in the 50 free. Perri Stahl finished second in the 100 breast for the Wildcats.

Ben Doyle led the Penn State men with a formidable double, winning the 100 fly and the 100 breast. Second in the former event was senior Michael Daly, the winner of the 100 back. Jacob Oberle was second in the 100 back and third in the 100 fly.

Tommy Hurley won the 50 free and was third in the 100 free. Miles Cochrane won the 200 breast after finishing second to Doyle in the 100. In addition to Daly, seniors Carlos Vasquez (200 fly), William Lulek (200 IM) and Jonah Cey (1-meter and 3-meter diving) added victories.

Villanova’s best result was a second-place finish for Nolan Danus in the 200 fly.
