Mare Nostrum Series Set to Second Leg in Canet (Entry Lists)
The opening stop of this year’s Mare Nostrum Series featured several stellar performances when the tour visited Monaco over the weekend. While Dutchwoman Marrit Steenbergen registered a mark of 52.13 in the 100-meter freestyle, American McKenzie Siroky delivered several sub-30 efforts in the 50 breaststroke, including a 29.64 effort that made her the No. 6 performer in history.
On the men’s side, Ilya Kharun excelled in the 50 butterfly, a 22.64 time produced in the final of the event. Kharun, a standout for Arizona State University, is in the process of changing his sport nationality from Canada to the United States. Meanwhile, Hungarian Kristof Milak checked in with a 50.66 performance in the 100 fly, an event in which he is the reigning Olympic champion.
A longtime fixture on the swimming calendar, the Mare Nostrum Series will hold its second leg in Canet, France this week, with action taking place on Wednesday and Thursday. The majority of the athletes who excelled in Monaco will also compete in Canet, with Kharun scheduled to race in all three butterfly events. Steenbergen is entered in the 200 individual medley, in addition to another run at the 100 freestyle.
Germany’s Anna Elendt and the United States’ Jack Alexy are listed on the entry lists for Canet, Elendt in the breaststroke disciplines and Alexy in the sprint freestyles. Once the series completes its visit to France, action will move to Barcelona for the final leg of the tour.
