Lukas Märtens Lowers German 200 Back Record; Van Mathias Tops 100m Breaststroke Rankings in Bergen
Lukas Märtens lowered the German 200 back record that had stood for almost 14 years and Van Mathias went top of the 100m breaststroke rankings at the Bergen Swim Festival.
Märtens was completely dominant and it proved to be him against the clock which he stopped at 1:55.85. He sliced 0.02 off the previous national record of 1:55.87 that had stood to Jan-Philip Glania since May 2012. The 400 free world champion and world record holder was more than six seconds ahead of Michal Judickij (2:01.95) with Oskar Erlev in third (2:02.71).
Mathias was out in 26.99 and back in 31.20 to stop the clock at 58.19 to displace Shin Ohashi at the top of the rankings after the Japanese posted 58.67 last month.
Mathias rises to second American all-time after going within 0.05 of Michael Andrew’s national record of 58.14 from the 2021 Olympic trials. He led home a clean sweep of US swimmers with Brian Benzing (1:00.25) and Luke Barr (1:00.32) joining him on the podium.
Siobhan Haughey pulled away from Anna Peplowski on the third 50 to win the 200 free in 1:54.31 to 1:55.82. Sofia Astedt took third in 1:59.67.
Dare Rose won the 200 fly in 1:55.64 ahead of Kregor Zirk (1:56.99) with Mikkel Henne Myklatun almost nine seconds adrift in 2:05.92.
Marrit Steenbergen enjoyed an emphatic 50 back victory in 27.75 ahead of Hanna Rosvall (28.41) and Fanny Teijonsalo (28.56).
Henrik Christiansen was the only man inside 8mins to win the 800 free in 7:59.74; Olivia Klint Ipsen took the women’s 200 breaststroke in 2:30.43 with Manon Domingeon heading the women’s 400IM in 4:56.01.
