Ludovica Terlizzi, Mate Karpati Capture 10K Titles at Junior Open Water World Championships
Athletes from Italy and Hungary upheld their countries’ rich traditions in open-water swimming during Thursday action at the World Junior Open Water Championships. While the 10k girls’ race was won by Italian Ludovica Terlizzi, Hungarian Mate Karpati was the gold medalist in the boys’ race.
Terlizzi overwhelmed the girls’ field, as she claimed victory in 1:55:35.00, which was more than a minute clear of runnerup Polina Koziakina (1:56:55.40) of Russia. The bronze medal was secured by Hungary’s Napsugar Nagy (1:57.:28.40), who finished ahead of countrywoman Mira Miszlai (1:57:33.20). Terlizzi is a two-time silver medalist at the European Junior Championships, winning one medal in open-water competition and the other in the 800 freestyle relay.
On the boys’ side, Karpati prevailed in a clash of 17-year-olds, as he got the touch ahead of the United States’ Colin Jacobs. Karpati registered a time of 1:46:46.30, with Jacobs placing second in 1:46:51.70. Rounding out the podium was Brazil’s Arthur Aguiar (1:46:53.30), who was followed in fourth place by France’s Ethan Parker (1:46:54.20). Jacobs has committed to Cal-Berkeley for his college career.
The Junior Open Water Champs will run through Sunday in Santa Fe, Argentina.
