Fans Can’t Decide: Katie Ledecky and Summer McIntosh Deadlocked in 800 Freestyle Poll

Katie Ledecky and Summer McIntosh Deadlocked in 800 Freestyle Poll
When Swimming World launched its latest poll, asking readers to select their winner of the women’s 800-meter freestyle at the upcoming World Championships in Singapore, we figured the results would be close. After all, the options featured Katie Ledecky and Summer McIntosh, who each recently delivered a sensational performance in the event – a world record from Ledecky and the No. 3 all-time mark from McIntosh.
Yet, as voting unfolded, it was stunning to see just how split fans of the sport are on the outcome of this highly anticipated showdown. From the start, neither woman ever had a significant lead. While Ledecky jumped ahead during the early stages of voting, McIntosh grabbed a lead later in the process. Eventually, Ledecky drew even and, through more than 600 votes, the women were tied at 343 votes apiece at the point of this writing.
The showdown between Ledecky and McIntosh at the World Championships will be one of the highlights in Singapore, as it will bring together the two-fastest women in event history. Ledecky is a four-time Olympic champion in the 800 freestyle while McIntosh has only recently elevated herself to the level that Ledecky has known over 16 laps for more than a decade.
How will the 800 freestyle play out at the World Championships? We’ll find out in about a month. Let’s hope the duel between Ledecky and McIntosh is as tight as the voting in this poll.
