Kate Kovenock Will Not Return as Brown Women’s Swim Coach

Brown University on Monday announced that Kate Kovenock will not return as the head coach of its women’s swimming and diving team.

Kovenock had been in charge of the program since the start of the 2014-15 season. She compiled an overall dual-meet record of 46-41 and a 35-40 mark in Ivy League competition. The Bears finished fourth at the Ivy League Championships this year.

“We thank Kate for her leadership of our women’s swim and dive program,” Vice President for Athletics and Recreation M. Grace Calhoun said in a press release. “We are grateful for her contributions and wish her well in her next chapter.”

Brown qualified two swimmers for NCAAs this season – Natalie Garre, a Division III national champion at Bowdoin College who transferred in, and Morgan Lukinac. Garre placed 35th in the 1,650 free and 50th in the 500. Lukinac was 40th in the 200 free and 41st in the 100 free.

Brown finished fourth among the Ancient Eight at the league championships this year with 1,137 points, just 16 back of Harvard for third and within 100 of runner-up Penn. It’s the fourth straight year they’ve finished fourth in the league. In all, Kovenock led Brown to five fourth-place results; when she did that for the first time in 2019, it was the Bears’ best finish since 2005. She also in 2018 led the team to consecutive winning dual-meet seasons in the league for the first time since 2006.

A Connecticut College graduate, Kovenock arrived at Brown after five seasons as an assistant at Notre Dame. She spent four seasons as an assistant at Division III power Kenyon.

The men’s team at Brown has a separate coaching staff, led by Kevin Norman.
