Italy Names Squad Of 32 For Short-Course Europeans

Olympic champions Thomas Ceccon and Nicolo Martinenghi are among an Italy squad of 32 bound for the European Short Course Championships in Lublin, Poland next month.

The pair are among 20 men and 12 women to make the trip for the 2025 edition of the meet that runs from 2-7 December of which seven will make their senior debut at the event.

Benedetta Pilato and Chiara Tarantino won’t be travelling to Poland however with the pair banned for 90 days from early October following their arrests for shoplifting in Singapore.

The Azzurri have won 264 medals in the history of the event (82 gold, 96 silver, and 86 bronze), including seven gold, 12 silver and three bronze among an overall total of 22 at the last edition in Otopeni, Romania, in 2023. That placed them second in the table behind Great Britain who earned two more golds among their medal tally of 23.

Technical director Cesare Butini said through the Italian federation: “The continental short course event represents the first major international event of a competitive season that will be very intense; in the summer we will first have the European Championships in Paris, from 10 to 16 August, and then the Mediterranean Games in Taranto from 20 to 26 August. It is an important year, which will allow us to view and evaluate many young people and to feed the basis for the composition of the team that will participate in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

“So with the call-ups we have decided to further encourage the generational change, which already started with the World Championships in Budapest in short course (in 2024) and in Singapore; we have also included in the group Alessandra Mao and Paola Borrelli who last season had obtained the individual time for the world championship even though they did not participate because they were involved in youth events.”
