Italy Announces 34-Strong Delegation for World Championships
Italy on Thursday announced a team of 34 swimmers for the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore this summer.
The team includes 16 women and 18 men, ranging in age from new European junior champion Bianca Nannucci, who is 17, to 32-year-old Silvia Di Pietro. Veterans Gregorio Paltrinieri, Thomas Ceccon, Nicolo Martinenghi, Simona Quadarella and Benedetta Pilato are included. The team will also have Carlos D’Ambrosio, the youngest member of the Paris Olympic team, and young female sprint star Sara Curtis in the squad.
Ceccon and Martinenghi won gold medals in the 100 back and 100 breast, respectively, at the Paris Olympics. Paltrinieri earned his fifth career Olympic medal with silver in the 1500 free and bronze in the 800, and the Italian men claimed bronze in the 400 free relay.
One of the big names missing is Alessandro Miressi, who won silver in the 100 free at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships and has been a stalwart of Italy’s elite sprint relays. Other medalists for Italy at the Doha Worlds, including Sara Franceschini, Quadarella, Pilato and Alberto Razzetti, will be in Singapore. The team also includes American-based breaststroker Anita Bottazzo and Ludovico Viberti, coming off an Italian record at Sette Colli.
