Indiana Completes Sweep of USC Invitational as Zalan Sarkany, Miranda Grana, Liberty Clark Shine

The Indiana Hoosiers wrapped up the two-day competition in Los Angeles with five dual-meet victories, sweeping USC and Texas A&M while also knocking off the UCLA women. The Hoosiers received standout performances from distance standout Zalan Sarkany, backstroker Miranda Grana and rising freshman freestyler Liberty Clark.

Grana posted a sizzling performance in the 200 backstroke, clocking a mark of 1:49.85 as the Hoosiers swept the top-three spots in the event. Shortly after, Clark continued her breakout meet with a winning time of 47.39 in the 100 freestyle, putting her almost a second ahead of USC’s Minna Abraham (48.34). Ella Roselli topped 1-meter diving (288.70), and the team of Clark, Macky Hodges, Grana and Kristina Paegle took out the 400 free relay in a time of 3:12.20.

The Trojan women got a win from Claire Tuggle in the 1650 free (16:34.79) and another from Ashley McMillan in the 200 breaststroke (2:10.33). Justina Kozan led the way in the 200 butterfly in 1:54.63.

The Indiana men swept every swimming event but one held Saturday, beginning with Sarkany clocking 14:29.87 in the 1650 free, less than nine seconds off the 14:21.29 he posted to win his second consecutive NCAA title in the event last season. Miroslav Knedla followed with a time of 1:40.44 in the 200 backstroke, a race where Indiana swept the top-four places, and Mikkel Lee touched in 43.31 for the win in the 100 free.

Noah Cakir overcame a challenge from Texas A&M’s Roberto Bonilla Flores in the 200 breast, winning 1:54.19 to 1:54.82. Raekwon Noel, Lee, Dylan Smiley and Owen McDonald combined for a win in the 400 free relay, touching in 2:50.98.

USC did pick up a lone win in the 200 butterfly courtesy of Krzysztof Chmielewski, a two-time World Championship medalist in the long course version of the event. Chmielewski touched in 1:41.16, 0.85 clear of Indiana’s McDonald (1:42.01). Moritz Wesemann completed the diving sweep with a win in the 3-meter event (382.10).
