Filip Nowacki went fifth all-time in the British rankings with a 2:08.32 European junior 200 breaststroke record as he claimed two titles on day four of the continental junior championships in Samorin.

Nowacki now sits within 1.02 of Ross Murdoch’s British record of 2:07.30 with the 2014 Commonwealth champion atop the all-time national standings. London 2012 silver medallist Michael Jamieson (2:07.43), James Wilby (2:07.49) and Andrew Willis (2:07.73) are the other men ahead of Nowacki who slots in 0.02 ahead of Adam Peaty and his 2:08.34 from the 2015 British championships.

It also propelled him to eighth fastest in the world this year 1.08 off Yamato Fukasawa’s rankings topper.

“I definitely had the Championship record on my horizon as I had been training really well, but I didn’t think I was going to swim that quick so I kind of surprised myself to be honest,” he told European Aquatics. “Doruk is a great competitor, he out-touched me to win this title last year and he’s a great talent. We’ve been competing against each other since last year. He swims a good time, I swim a little bit quicker, he swims a little bit quicker. Before my semi-final when I heard he had broken the Championship record in his race it made my heart go a little bit.”

Nowacki then played his part in the concluding victory earned by Great Britain as they made a successful defence of their mixed 4x100m medley title, lowering the Championship record and European junior record to 3:47.07.
