Evansville’s Toby Wilcox Announces Retirement from Coaching

Evansville’s Toby Wilcox announced his retirement from coaching on Thursday, spending his last two seasons in a second stint at his alma mater.

Wilcox spent 13 seasons as the head coach at Birmingham Southern before returning for a short stint at UE, from which he graduated in 1985 and where he began coaching in 1986.

“It was such a great experience to return to the University of Evansville,” Wilcox said in a press release. “Being able to reconnect with so many from the school, program, teammates, and student-athletes was a great way to finish out my coaching career!”

Wilcox was an assistant coach for the Purple Aces from 1986-88 before taking over the program from 1988-97. He founded the Division III BSC program in 2011 and stayed with it for more than a dozen years. Overall, Wilcox was named coach of the year in his conference eight times during his career.

Wilcox made Birmingham Southern a Division III factor, winning 121 Southern Athletic Association individual titles, 57 conference relay titles and sending 35 athletes to NCAA Division III Championships. He mentored 13 SAA Swimmers and seven SAA Divers of the Year.

Wilcox was a three-time Midwestern Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year in his first stint at Evansville, leading 24 swimmers to conference titles and minting three MCC Swimmers of the Year.

“Toby Wilcox has been an important part of the University of Evansville swimming and diving family for many years. Even though he returned for just the past two seasons, his connection to this program goes back much further,” said Dr. Ziggy Siegfried, Director of Athletics. “Toby has always cared deeply about our student-athletes and about representing UE the right way. We are grateful for his commitment to the program and wish him nothing but the best as he begins this next chapter.”
