European S/C Championships Day 4 Finals: Isabel Gose Out-Touches Simona Quadarella; Ceccon, Elendt Win

The European Short Course Swimming Championships continued with the Day 4 finals from Lublin, Poland.

The session will include finals of the women’s and men’s 100 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 100 butterfly and the women’s 800 free.

Semifinal events will be the women’s and men’s 200 IM and 100 freestyle.

Here is a look at what happened in the Day 4 finals:

European Championships Women’s 100 Backstroke

Great Britain’s Lauren Cox was fifth at the hallway point, but surged to the win in the 100 backstroke. She got to the wall in 56.51, just a hundredth of a second ahead of Maaike De Waard of the Netherlands, who finished in 56.62.

Germany’s Nina Holt took the bronze in 56.72, followed by France’s Pauline Mahieu (56.92), Spain’s Carmen Weiler Sastre (57.00), Sweden’s Hanna Rosvall (57.06), Denmark’s Victoria Bierre (57.79) and Portugal’s Camila Rodrigues Rebelo (58.10).

European Championships Men’s 100 Backstroke

Italy’s Thomas Ceccon was tied with France’s Mewen Tomac at the final turn and surged to the title in the 100 backstroke, finish in in 49.29.

Tomac was just behind in 49.68, followed by Great Britain’s Oliver Morgan (49.68).

Czech Republic’s Miroslav Knedla took fourth in 49.93, followed by Italy’s Lorenzo Mora (49.95), Romania’s Denis-Laurean Popescu (49.97), Ireland’s John Shortt (50.10) and Czech Republic’s Jan Cejka (50.34).

European Championships Women’s 200 Breaststroke

Germany’s Anna Elendt led start to finish to win the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.16.

Great Britain’s Angharad Evans took the silver in 2:18.90, ahead of Lithuania’s Kotryna Teterevkova (2:19.30).

Czech Republic’s Kristyna Horska finished fourth in 2:19.44, followed by Ireland’s Ellie McCartney (2:19.90), Romania’s Daria Asaftei (2:20.62) , Denmark’s Clara Rybak-Andersen (2:20.62) and Belgium’s Roos VanOtterdijk (2:21.05).

European Championships Men’s 200 Breaststroke

Spain’s Carles Coll Marti led from start to finish to claim the men’s 200 breast in 2:00;.86.

Caspar Corbeau of the Netherlands took the silver in 2:01.27, followed by Austria’s Luka Mladenovic (2:02.48).

Great Britain’s Filip Nowacki finished fourth in 2:02.96, followed by Romania’s Darius-Stefan Coman (2:03.17), Germany’s Jeremias Pock (2:04.52), Italy’s Gabriele Mancini (2:05.84) and Arno Kamminga (2:05.93) of the Netherlands.

European Championships Women’s 800 Freestyle

Germany’s Isabel Gose made her move early and was able to hold off Italy’s Simona Quaderalla and win the 800 free.

Gose got to the wall in 8:01.90, just ahead of Quaderella (8:03.00). They were 1-2 for nearly the entire race.

Germany’s Maya Werner finished third in (8:14.41), followed by Hungary’s Ajna Kesely (8:16.77), Spain’s Maria de Valdes Alvares (8:21.44), Greece’s Artemis Vasilaki (8:24.53) and Spain’s Angela Martinez Guillen (8:27.00).

European Championships Women’s 100 Butterfly

Denmark’s Martine Damborg claimed the title in the 100 fly, going a 55.52 to finish just three hundredths of a second ahead of Tessa Giele (55.55) of the Netherlands. It was a European Junior record.

The bronze went to Sweden’s Louise Hansson (55.69), followed by Greece’s Anna Ntountounaki (55.74), Belgium’s Roos VanOtterdijk (55.79), Germany’s Angelina Kohler (55.83), Finland’s Laura Lahtinen (55.97) and Hungary’s Panna Ugrai (57.28).

European Championships Men’s 100 Butterfly

France’s Maxime Grousset won the men’s event in 48.19. He led after the 50, fell behind at the 75 but surged to the wall just ahead of Switzerland’s Noe Ponti (48.11).

Italy’s Michele Busa was third (49.21) followed by compatriot Simone Stefani (49.35).

Poland took the next two spots with Michal Chmielewski (49.46) and Ksawery Masiuk (49.57), followed by Austria’s Simon Bucher (49.68) and France’s Clement Secchi (50.12).

Women’s 200 IM Semifinals

Great Britain took the top two spots heading into finals in the women’s 200 IM with Freya Colbert (2:06.42) and Katie Shanahan (2:06.57) swimming the top two times in the semifinals.

Ireland’s Ellen Walshe (2:06.63), Netherlands’ Marrit Steenbergen (2:06.85), Israel’s Anastasia Gorbenko (2:06.85), Slovakia’s Tamara Potocka (2:07.24), Italy’s Anita Gastaldi (2:07.72) ) and Spain’s Emma Carrasco Cadens (2:07.99) rounded out the top eight.

Men’s 200 IM Semifinals

Spain’s Hugo Gonzalez claimed the top seed in the men’s event with a semifinals swim of 1:52.68.

Turkey’s Berke Saka grabbed the second spot (1:53.16), followed by Great Britain’s Duncan Scott (1:53.22).

Italy’s Alberto Razzetti (1:53.48), Frances’ Mewen Tomac (1:53.83), Great Britain’s Max Litchfield (1:54.37), Finland’s Ronny Brannkarr (1:54.55) and Hungary’s Gabor Zombori (1:52.72) rounded out the top eight finalists.

 

Women’s 100 Free Semifinals

Italy’s Sara Curtis took the top spot in the 100 free finals after she got to the wall in 51.29 in the semifinals.

Great Britain’s Eva Okaro grabbed the second seed in 51.48, followed by Marrit Steenbergen (51.56), France’s Beryl Gastaldello (51.57), Hungary’s Minna Abraham (52.08), Czech Republic’s Barbora Janickova (52.14), Netherlands’ Milou Van Wijk (52.16) and Germany’s Nina Holt (52.56).

Men’s 100 Free Semifinals

France’s Maxime Grousset swam the second race of his double and took the top seed in the 100 freestyle, getting to the wall in 45.65.

Croatia’s Jere Hribar took the second spot in 45.76, followed by Italy’s Carlos D’Ambrosio (46.01), Spain’s Luca Hoek le Guenedal (46.04), Lithuania’s Thomas Lukminas (46.12), Spain’s Sergio De Celis Montalban (46.19) and Hungary’s Adam Jaszo (46.20).

Hungary’s Nandor Nemeth and Great Britain’s ‘s Matthew Richards tied for eighth at 46.23.
