European S/C Championships, Day 2 Prelims: Jack McMillan & Duncan Scott Progress As Matt Richards Misses Out
Jack McMillan returned the morning after being crowned 400 free champion to head the 200 on day two of the European Championships in Lublin, Poland.
McMillan led the way as the two-per-nation rule played its part in both the men’s and women’s 200 free prelims.
The session started with the 100IM heats and also featured the 4×50 mixed medley relay and concluded with the men’s 1500 free heats which included defending champion Daniel Wiffen, world record-holder Florian Wellbrock and Kuzey Tuncelli, who holds the WJR.

Men’s 100IM
Andreas Vazaios, who won the bronze two years ago at Otopeni 2023, led the way in 52.09 with Heiko Gigler (52.32) pipping his Austrian teammate Luka Mladenovic by 0.01 in 52.32 to 52.33. Noè Ponti, silver medallist in 2023, was next in 52.38 and returns for the semi tonight when he’ll also be taking on the 50 fly final in which he rattled his own WR on the opening night.

Women’s 100IM
Marrit Steenbergen has already visited the top of the Lublin podium as part of the Netherlands 4×50 free squad that won on the opening evening. She posted 57.99 to lead prelims ahead of Roos Vanotterdijk (58.59), Anastasia Gorbenko (58.61) and Ellen Walshe (58.80).

Men’s 200 Free
If ever there was a race that underlined Britain’s depth, it was this. Olympic silver medallist Matt Richards went in the sixth of eight prelims where he touched first in 1:41.79. He had to wait until the final prelim for his GB teammates where McMillan and Duncan Scott – Olympic silver medallist in Tokyo – were in lanes three and four. McMillan surged ahead with the pair 1-2 for much of the race and although Scott came back on the final 25, it was McMillan who was first in 1:41.41 to 1:41.58. It meant the Stirling training partners progressed to the semis with Richards, the defending champion, third swiftest but out because only two swimmers per nation can advance from prelims.

Women’s 200 Free
The two-per-nation rule played its part once more as Hungarian women filled three of the top four slots. Minna Abraham (1:53.51) and Nikolett Padar (1:54.18) were the two fastest women with Panna Ugrai missing out after posting 1:54.29. Steenbergen was back in the water to go third in 1:54.24 with defending champion Freya Anderson safely through in 1:54.47.

Mixed 4x50m Medley Relay
This was a race with several storylines. The Netherlands booked lane four for the final in 1:37.40 ahead of Denmark (1:37.53) and Sweden (1:38.23). Eneli Jefimova split 28.81 as Estonia qualified fifth in 1:38.92 while Ruta Meilutyte went 29.27 as Lithuania claimed the eighth and final spot for tonight’s decider in 1:39.32. France – with the likes of Maxime Grousset and Yohann Ndoye Brouard or Mewen Tomac to slot in – didn’t make it through but are instead are second reserves in 10th with Norway ninth.

Men’s 1500 Free
Zalan Sarkany posted 14:23.95 in the penultimate heat before the final heat featured Wiffen and Wellbrock alongside each other. The Irishman went through 800 in 7:38 with the defending champion leading until the final 25 when Victor Johansson went past him to post 14:23.98 to 14:24.38. Tuncelli squeaked through in eighth place (14:33.05) but there’s no place for Oliver Klemet (14:33.56) or Damien Joly (14:33.98).
