European S/C Championships: Day 1 Prelims, Women: Isabel Gose & Simona Quadarella Get Meet Underway
The European Short Course Championships got underway with the first session of prelims in Lublin, Poland.
The six-day meet started with the women’s 400 free featuring Isabel Gose and Simona Quadarella with the 50 fly, 100m breaststroke, 200 back and 4×50 free to come.

400 Freestyle
Gose led from the front in the fourth and final heat to stop the clock at 3:56.90, just 0.06 off her 3:56.84 national record set at the short-course worlds in Budapest in December last year for the second-fastest performance of her career. It makes her third performer in the world this year with Lani Pallister dominating the top of the rankings with the five top times headed by 3:51.87 with Erika Fairweather second in 3:56.12.
Freya Colbert of Great Britain was third through in 4:01.78.
50 Butterfly
Louise Hansson led the way in 25.17 with Martine Damborg and Roos Vanotterdijk both clocking 25.20. It was a european junior record for the former who shaved 0.01 from her own mark set last year in Copenhagen.

100 Breaststroke
Eneli Jefimova set a swift pace in pursuit of the defence of her title as she went within 0.03 of her Estonian record in 1:03.44. Anna Elendt, winner of the world title in Singapore, was next home in 1:04.22 followed by Florine Gaspard (1:04.70),

200 Backstroke
There were just two heats of the 200 back with 18 swimmers meaning there was little jeopardy for the women. Olympic finalist Katie Shanahan headed the field in 2:04.85.

4x50m Freestyle Relay
The Netherlands led the way into the final in 1:35.42 with Marrit Steenbergen to come in. Germany booked the adjacent lane in 1:35.69n with Italy – featuring a 23.27 split from Silvia di Pietro – qualifying third in 1:36.32 with Sara Curtis set for the final. Sweden claimed the eighth spot for the final with Denmark the team to be locked out.
