Erica Sullivan’s 1500 Upset Victory Highlights Day 5 of 2017 U.S. Open

Erica Sullivan was one of the highlights of day five of the 2017 U.S. Open Championships. The teenager powered to victory over experienced distance swimmer Ashley Twichell to kickstart the fifth and final day of competition.

Other highlights include Ryan Lochte downing the meet record in the men’s 200 IM.

Women’s 1500 Free

Erica Sullivan of Sandpipers of Nevada turned in the top time in the women’s 1500 free, delivering a final time of 16:05.83 to win by more than five seconds.

North Carolina’s Ashley Twichell picked up second with a time of 16:10.99, followed by Schroeder YMCA’s Casey Jernberg and her time of 16:24.76.

Joy Field of Magnolia Aquatic finished fourth overall with a time of 16:34.28, just ahead of Ashley Neidigh’s 16:36.66.

Ohio State’s Molly Kowal (16:40.05), La Mirada’s Taylor Ault (16:42.70), and H2Okie’s Grace Kowal (16:43.54) concluded the top eight.

Women’s 200 IM

Meaghan Raab of Nashville Aquatics won a narrow victory over Long Island’s Margaret Aroesty in finals of the women’s 200 IM. Raab powered to a final time of 2:12.56 over Aroesty’s 2:12.83.

France’s Fantine LeSaffre earned third overall with a time of 2:14.58, just ahead of Metroplex’s Vanessa Pearl’s 2:14.81.

Lisa Bratton of Texas A&M turned in a time of 2:15.57 for fifth, while Nora McCullagh of Longhorn Aquatics finished sixth with a time of 2:16.59.

Alabama’s Mia Nonnenberg and Gulliver Swim’s Kelly Fertel were seventh and eighth with times of 2:17.08 and 2:17.48.

Men’s 200 IM

Ryan Lochte’s return to swimming continued today with a top showing in the men’s 200 IM. Now swimming for Trojan Swim Club, he turned in a time of 1:59.24 to be the only athlete beneath the two minute mark. His time downed Michael Phelps’ own 2006 U.S. Open meet record of 1:59.26 by a shy .02 seconds.

Swim Wales’ Xavier Mohammed picked up second overall with a time of 2:00.47, while Longhorn Aquatics’ Sam Stewart rounded out the podium with a time of 2:01.51.

Brock Bonetti of Texas A&M was fourth overall with a time of 2:02.35, followed by Gator Swim Club’s Alexander Lebed’s 2:02.97.

Ridgefield’s Kieran Smith (2:03.06), Michigan Lakeshore’s Kyle Maas (2:03.89), and Hudson Explorer’s Ross Palazzo (2:05.23) were sixth through eighth.

Men’s 800 Free

France’s Damien Joly posted the top time of the evening in the men’s 800 free, delivering a gold-medal showing of 7:53.26.

Logan Houck of Sandpipers of Nevada placed second overall with a 7:56.05, followed closely by Matt Hutchins’ third place finish of 7:56.14.

France’s Joris Bouchaut took fourth overall with a time of 7:56.22, while fellow countryman Mathis Castera was fifth with a time of 8:01.74.

Andrew Brady (8:02.94), Kentucky Aquatic’s Isaac Jones (8:03.83), and Alamo Area’s Mikey Calvillo (8:03.99) rounded out the top eight.

Women’s 50 Free

Madison Kennedy of SwimMAC Carolina sprinted to the top of the podium in finals of the women’s 50 free. Kennedy posted the only sub 25-second time at a 24.92 for gold.

Marie Wattel of France turned in a second place finish of 25.06, while Longhorn Aquatics’ Rebecca Millard rounded out the podium with a time of 25.52.

Nashville Aquatics’ Gretchen Walsh took fourth overall with a time of 25.57, followed closely by Tucson Ford’s Margo Geer and her time of 25.58.

Amanda Kendall (25.67), Alabama’s Bailey Scott (25.68), and Texas A&M’s Kristin Malone (25.82) were sixth through eighth.

Men’s 50 Free

Brad Tandy, swimming unattached, splashed and dashed to the top of the podium with a sizzling time of 21.70 in the men’s 50 free. He was followed by fellow sprint star Cullen Jones, representing Wolfpack Elite, and his time of 22.03.

Michael Andrew of Race Pace Club rounded out the top three with a time of 22.22, followed closely by Longhorn Aquatics’ Tate Jackson and his time of 22.40.

Alabama’s Robert Howard took fifth overall with a 22.46, while Brett Ringgold was sixth with a time of 22.71.

BJ Hornikel and Kyle Robrock, both swimming unattached, finished seventh and eighth with times of 22.87 and 22.91 respectively.

Of some interest: Xavier Mohammed from Swim Wales swam at Arizona State 8-10 years ago.
