Women’s 400 Free

Mikkayla Sheridan put up a bit of a surprising top seed in the 400 free prelims with a 4:05.84 to lead a decently stacked final into Friday night in Adelaide at the Australian Short Course Championships. Sheridan is the top seed ahead of Madison Wilson (4:06.71) and Jess Ashwood (4:08.09). Ashwood made her return to racing last night winning the 800 after sitting out this summer’s World Championships. Wilson is a bit of a surprise in the two seed as she is usually known as a 100 backstroker and an occasional 200 freestyler.

Kiah Melverton (4:08.89), Leah Neale (4:09.19), Jordan White (4:09.50), Mikayla Messer (4:09.84), Tamsin Cook (4:09.95), Madeline Gough (4:10.24) and Moesha Johnson (4:12.99) will also swim in the final on Friday night as they will swim ten lanes in the final.

Women’s 100 Back

Australia has been known the last couple of years for having strong female backstrokers led by World Champion in the 200 Emily Seebohm. But it was Minna Atherton who took the top seed on Friday morning at the Australian Short Course Championships with a 57.56 to Seebohm’s 58.31. Atherton was the World Junior Champion in 2015 and has been looked at as a future superstar in Australia.

Another rising star Kaylee McKeown will also swim in tonight’s final as she placed third in prelims at 58.49. She is better at the 200, but she can put together a good 100 as she is still only 16. World University Games champion Sian Whittaker (58.75) was the fourth and final swimmer under a minute this morning.

Abby Duncan (1:00.06), Holly Barratt (1:00.23), Gabriella Peiniger (1:00.85), Micaela Habib (1:01.01), Jessica Adams (1:01.74) and Charli Brown (1:02.10) also swam in this morning’s prelims and will swim again at finals.

Men’s 100 Breast

From a strong event to a weak event, the men’s 100 breast has been a weak spot for the Australian team ever since the retirement of Christian Sprenger. Olympian Jake Packard has filled that void the last few years but he is only the fifth seed going into tonight after posting a 59.39. Liam Hunter (58.73), Samuel Williamson (59.02) and Zac Stubblety-Cook (59.37) have the top three spots ahead of Packard as Grayson Bell (59.38) is in there as well. Who knows if Packard has more left in the engine tonight? Packard sat out the World Championships this past summer.

James McKechnie (59.65), Alex Milligan (59.67), Tommy Sucipto (59.81), Ewan Bennett (1:00.03) and Lennard Bremer (1:00.55) will also swim in the final tonight.
