Emily Jones Leads Alabama to Win over Miami

Emily Jones won two individual events and was part of four victorious relays as Alabama topped Miami, 224-110, in a two-day non-conference meet.

Jones and the sprint contingent led the way in Coral Gables. She won the 50 freestyle in 22.03 seconds, with teammate Eline Adopo second. Jones also bested teammate Zara Zallen to the win in the 100 butterfly in 51.02 seconds.

Jones started the meet by swimming backstroke in the 400 medley relay, teaming with Zallen, Gaby Van Brunt and Jada Scott to win in 3:28.87. (Jones’ split of 51.17 was nearly two seconds quicker than the 53.09 that Ella Justice used to claim the individual event.)

Jones went 22.08 to lead off the 200 free relay with Scott, Van Brunt and Zallen to win in 1:28.38. Their 200 medley relay got to the wall first in 1:35.22 (Jones, Zallen, Van Brunt, Scott), and Jones’ 48.04 started a 3:13.58 400 freestyle relay that claimed a victory. Van Brunt, Scott and Zallen comprised the rest of that foursome.

Van Brunt won the 100 free in 48.34 with Scott second. Scott won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.57 that edged teammate Madyson Hartway by .04 seconds. Hartway would capture the 200 breast later in the meet with a time of 2:13.44, on the right side of a touch over Miami’s Sophie Lenze by .18 seconds. Zallen claimed the 200 free in 1:45.38. Iman Avdic won the 500 free in 4:45.64, and Ava Grazziani’s time of 1:54.69 was good enough to take home the 200 back.

The longer the event, generally the better for Miami’s chances. The Hurricanes secured a win from Marissa Inouye in 9:47.95 in the 1,000 free. Ashleyn Massey won the 200 fly in 1:55.11, and Taylor Johannsen added a late victory in the 400 individual medley in 4:15.64.

Miami swept diving with Aurelie Sevigny scoring 353.63 points on 3-meter and Emma Gulstrand tallying 312.15 on 1-meter with Sevigny second.
