Men’s 400 Freestyle Relay
Arizona State ripped its season-best time in the 400 free relay, the quartet of Ilya Kharun, Tommy Palmer, Patrick Sammon and Jonny Kulow going 2:45.13. That’s more than a second quicker than they had been in the fall. Kharun led off in 41.03, faster than the time that Kulow used to win the 100 free. Kulow anchored in 40.55. Those are the two fastest swims of the race, and Sammon’s 41.55 ranks third.
NC State was second in 2:48.51, with Kaii Winkler, Sam Hoover, Luke Miller and Jerry Fox. Fox brought it home in 41.75.
Chris Guiliano led off Texas’s relay in 41.87, joining Hubert Kos, Rex Maurer and Luke Hobson to go 2:49.04.

As a retired short axis swim coach, looking at these women I can’t help think of the wasted energy of the flutter kick being wasted into the air. Think someone with a great dolphin kick (Gretchen) utilizing a kick where none of the energy is wasted into the air, all power directed into the water. Can you imagine Gretchen’s one hundred free at 44 seconds?
