Eddie Reese Texas Showdown, Session 1: Virginia Medley Relay Buzzes Within .1 of NCAA Record
It’s the doldrums of January training. No one told the University of Virginia women’s team.
The Cavaliers buzzed within a tenth of a second of their NCAA record Friday to open Session 1 of the Eddie Reese Texas Showdown at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. That started a speedy opening session of three at the meet which brings together some of the nation’s top programs.
At the end of the opening sessions, the Virginia women and Texas men are on top of the team standings.
Women’s 200 medley relay
Virginia very nearly set an NCAA record, for the second time this season. The quartet of Claire Curzan, Alex Walsh, Gretchen Walsh and Anna Moesch went 1:31.61. That’s within a tenth of the 1:31.51 set by the Walshes, Lexi Cuomo and Kate Douglass at NCAAs in 2023. The same four swimmers went 1:31.53 two weeks ago against Virginia Tech. The difference to the record is all there in the relay pickups, with .79 seconds left on the blocks.
Texas was second in 1:34.85, well ahead of NC State’s 1:36.19. That was from NC State’s B team, splitting their power somewhat between A and B.

Men’s 500 freestyle
Texas celebrated the meet’s namesake by taking the top four spots in the 500 free, one of the program’s bread-and-butter events. American record holder Rex Maurer didn’t summon those speeds – in part because he miscounted the laps and finished to his feet – but he won in 4:12.80. That was ahead of Olympic medalist Luke Hobson, who went 4:13.11. Third was David Johnston in 4:14.36, a half second up on Coby Carrozza.
The first non-Texan to finish was Lance Norris of NC State in 4:14.89. Daniel Matheson was sixth.
