Duncan Scott On “Special” Commonwealth Games As India Confirmed As 2030 Hosts

Three-time Commonwealth champion Duncan Scott described the Commonwealth Games as “a special part of my career” after Amdavad – also known as Ahmedabad – was formally ratified as the host of the Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030.

The decision confirmed that the city in the Indian state of Gujarat will stage the landmark edition of the Games came after delegates from the 74 Commonwealth member nations and territories ratified India’s bid at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow.

The announcement was greeted by 20 Garba dancers and 30 Indian dhol drummers at the General Assembly Hall. Garba is a dance that originated in Gujarat with the performance featuring members of Glasgow’s Indian community, and those from other parts of the Commonwealth.

Scott won his first senior international medal at the 2014 Games in Glasgow where he swam the penultimate leg of the 4×200 free as Team Scotland won silver behind an Australia quartet led off by Cam McEvoy.

The Scot has won three titles among 13 Commonwealth medals and will compete in his fourth Games next year in Glasgow after being the first swimmer preselected to Team Scotland after being part of the winning GB 4×2 team at the World Championships in Singapore.

He said: “The Commonwealth Games are a special part of my career. Taking part in a home Games is incredible, so I’m excited for Indian athletes who’ll get to do that in 2030. And for everyone else we’ve got an opportunity to expand our horizons and experience the ambition and colour of Amdavad and India. I loved the chance to compete in the Gold Coast in Australia as part of a travelling Team Scotland.

“We look forward to handing over the Games to Amdavad in great shape after welcoming all to Glasgow next year.”

In a press conference following the confirmation, it was announced that India was looking to stage several global sporting events including the 2033 World Aquatics Championships.

With 13 medals, Scott is the most decorated Scottish athlete in Commonwealth history. Given he’d be 33 by the time 2030 comes around, he wouldn’t be drawn on whether he’d be looking at a fifth Games, saying: “I’m 28 just now – I don’t know what I’m doing tomorrow, never mind in 2030.”

He added: “I don’t want to commit either way but what I will say is I find it really exciting hearing not only that Amdavad wants to host the Commonwealth Games but a number of other events. I think that that is really exciting from an athletes point of view, seeing that it’s going to have this legacy for multiple sports as well

“For myself, I think firstly I’ll look ahead to the Commonwealth Games that are happening next year in Glasgow and then we’ll see after that.

“Let’s get through Glasgow 2026 and then hopefully I’ll look to LA and then by then it’s still plenty of time away. I’m really happy to be here and be involved and anything that’s anything to do with the Commonwealth Games: it was a real starting point in my career in 2014 in Glasgow. I have got so much respect and love for the Commonwealth Games and the legacy that it brings for different parts of the world and the way that it brings everyone together. It really does have that friendly atmosphere.

“I’ll not commit to it either way but I’m definitely really looking forward to what it can bring in 2030.”

The Lessons Of Delhi 2010

The dates of the Games haven’t yet been formalised although October is the preferred time of year which would make it exactly 20 years since they were held in Delhi in 2010.

There were numerous issues at the 2010 Games where many swimmers fell ill with water at the Dr. S.P. Mukherjee Aquatic Complex suspected as a potential source. It forced some to withdraw while Fran Halsall of Team England fainted.

However, while recognising there were issues in Delhi, the delegation insisted lessons had been learned.

Shri. Ashwini Kumar, Principal Secretary Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department, Government of Gujarat said: “The 2010 Games were one of the best Games that were ever hosted but there were some challenges as rightly pointed out. This time we are well prepared. The organising committee is gong to be established in a month or so. Our fundamentals are very strong. One of the major highlight of 2030 Amdavad is that most of the venues are already ready. We have existing venues which are capable of hosting Commonwealth Games events today with some modifications here and there.”

There are aspirations for Amdavad to be the sports capital of India and according to Kumar, they have procured the funding for two infrastructure projects which will be able to stage a hosts of sports and events including the 2029 World Police and Fire Games.

Kumar added of the 2030 Games: “This time there is a solid team behind the project. The funding has been secured, the budget has been meticulously worked out and we are very confident that we will deliver a Games which you will remember in years to come. And we understand the responsibility of delivering a Games which is sustainable, which can be taken forward for the next 100 years.

“I would like to assure these Games are going to be one of the best Commonwealth Games that you have seen.”

Sport Programme At 2030

In addition to confirming the hosts for 2030, Commonwealth Sport also confirmed that 15 – 17 sports will feature at Amdavad 2030.

It follows Commonwealth Sport’s recently concluded Sport Programme Review which outlines the sports which will feature at the Commonwealth Games which are Athletics and Para Athletics, Swimming and Para Swimming, Table Tennis and Para Table Tennis, Bowls and Para Bowls, Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting, Artistic Gymnastics, Netball and Boxing.

The process to finalise the remainder of the programme will start next month, and the full Centenary Games line-up will be announced next year.

The sports under consideration are: Archery, Badminton, 3×3 Basketball and 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Cricket T20, Cycling, Diving, Hockey, Judo, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Rugby Sevens, Shooting, Squash, Triathlon and Para Triathlon and Wrestling. The host can also propose up to two new or traditional sports.

Dr Donald Rukare, who was elected President of Commonwealth Sport in Glasgow, said“This is the start of a new golden era for Commonwealth Sport. After a ‘Games reset’ we head to Glasgow 2026 in fantastic shape to welcome the 74 teams of the Commonwealth before setting our sights on Amdavad 2030 for a special Centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games.

“India brings scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, enormous sporting passion and relevance, and I’m delighted to report strong interest from a range of nations to host the 2034 Games and beyond. We start our next century for the Commonwealth Games in good health.”

Dr PT Usha, President of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, said: “We are deeply honoured by the trust shown by Commonwealth Sport. The 2030 Games will not only celebrate a hundred years of the Commonwealth Movement but also lay the foundation for the next century. It will bring together Athletes, communities, and cultures from across the Commonwealth in a spirit of friendship and progress.”
