David Curtiss Breaks 50 Freestyle YMCA National Record on Night Four

On night four at the University of Maryland at the 2018 YMCA Long Course National Championships one YMCA National Record fell and a number of swimmers put together impressive performances in 50 freestyle and 50 butterfly doubles.

At the end of day four Red Bank still leads the women’s (362) and men’s (347) team races, but Cheshire (311) is still in contention on the women’s side while Somerset Hills (300.5) is not far behind on the men’s.

Women

Abigail Doss of Susquehanna led at the first 100 of the 400 freestyle and never looked back. The 16 year old stopped the clock in 4:17.80 to win the event. Three seconds back was Lucy Callard of Powel Crosley (4:20.16). Aziza Ganihanova of Somerset Valley picked up third place with her 4:23.71.

Blue Ash’s Megan Glass was the only swimmer under 28 seconds tonight in the 50 fly. She raced to a 27.66. Fanwood Scotch Plain’s Darlene Fung earned silver with a 28.03 while bronze went to Greensboro’s Piper Burton in 28.30.

Fung was back again two events later, winning the 50 freestyle in a 26.31. Glass also stepped up onto the blocks again, posting a runner up finish with a 26.55. Aubrey Chandler of Rock Hill secured third with a 26.59.

Last night’s 50 breaststroke national record setter Jessica McMurray of York couldn’t knock down the record in the 100 tonight, but she did win the event. The 16 year old finished in 1:11.67, powered by a 38.00 on the way home. KC Moss‘ National mark (set in 2009) stands at 1:11.26. Finishing second was 50 breaststroke bronze medalist Victoria Eisenhauer of Lakeland Hills (1:12.16). ME Lyons’ Kate Overbey finished third (1:13.36).

In their battle for a team title the Cheshire women won the 800 freestyle relay by four seconds. Mia LekoAlexandra TylerElizabeth Boyer, and Sophie Murphy combined for an 8:26.69 ahead of Wilton’s 8:30.68.

Men

In his second swim of the day, Hamilton Area’s David Curtiss broke the 50 freestyle National Record in prelims and then lowered it at night. In the morning he posted a 22.77 to knock down Joe Bonk‘s 23.02 swum in 2012. Tonight Curtiss improved to a 22.64. He was the only one under 23 seconds. A full half second behind was Somerset Hills’ Jack Alexy (23.19). Rapid Area’s Henry Schutte picked up bronze (23.34).

Two men cleared four minutes in tonight’s 200 freestyle final. With a huge 10 second drop from prelims Fanwood Scotch Plains’ Josh Cohen got to the wall first, finishing in 3:57.94. After winning the 400 IM and 200 breaststroke Somerset Valley’s Matt Fallon added a silver with a 3:58.71. Somerset Hills’ Lukas Scheidl was third in 4:00.18.

Ridgewood’s Colton Phelps got his hands to the wall first in the 50 butterfly, stopping the clock in 25.08. Hamilton Area’s Curtiss was less than two tenths behind in 25.22. while Powel Crosley’s Luke Paxton finished third (25.70).

Paxton’s teammate Adam Sherman then won the 100 breaststroke with a 1:05.45. Western’s Billy Regan flew home in 35.00 to finish second in 1:06.28. Lancaster’s Blake Fry was third (1:06.59).

Somerset Hills’ Scheidl, Billy FallonDylan Wachenfeld, and Alexy ran away with the 800 freestyle relay, touching in 7:43.75 to Greenwich’s 7:49.62.
