CSCAA Dual Meet Challenge: Virginia Women, Arizona State Men Claim Titles

The Virginia women and the Arizona State men finished as champions of the CSCAA Dual Meet Challenge.

The Cavaliers defeated Michigan and the Sun Devils topped Tennessee on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Tennessee.

Michigan opened the women’s final with a win in the 200 medley relay. Bella Sims, Letitia Sim, Brady Kendall and Leila Fack got to the wall in 1:33.26 to hold off Virginia’ Claire Curzan, Emma Weber, Carly Novelline and Anna Moensch (1:33.46) by two tenths of a second.

Curzan (49.12) and Sims (49.17) both broke the meet record in the 100 backstroke. She also won the 100 fly in a meet-record 49.68.

Sim won the 100 breaststroke in a meet-record 58.12 to finish ahead of Weber (58.56). Sim also broke the meet record in the 200 breast in 2:06.52 to hold off Weber (2:08.60).

Moesch won the 50 free in 21.52 a hundredth of a second ahead of Kendall. Moensch also won the 100 free in 46.05, ahead of Michigan’s Stephanie Balduccini (47.22).

Virginia freshman Madi Mintenko won the 200 free in 1:41.70, holding off Balduccini (1:42.12).

Tess Howley won the 200 fly in 1:52.09, just ahead of Michigan’s Hannah Bellard (1:52.39).

Virginia’s Katie Grimes won the 200 backstroke in 1:52.15 going 1-2 with Charlotte Wilson (1:52.77).

Virginia’s Aimee Canny won the 500 free in a meet-record 4:34.62, ahead of teammate Cavan Gormsen (4:35.65) and Sims (4:39.76).

Leah Hayes won the 200 IM in 1:54.37 for the Cavaliers, going 1-2 with freshman Sophia Umstead (1:57.04).

Sarah Curtis, Moensch, Curzan and Bryn Greenwaldt won the 200 free relay in 1:24.98, ahead of Lexi Greenhawt, Kendall, Fack and Balduccini (1:26.47).

Moensch was named swimmer of the meet.

Arizona State 37, Tennessee 19

Arizona State’s Adam Chaney, Andy Dobrzanski, Ilya Kharun and Jonny Kulow won the 200 medley relay in a meet-record 1:20.56. To top it off, the Sun Devils went 1-2.

Kharun won the 100 fly in a pool-record 43.38, marking the fastest time in the nation this season.

Dobrzanski won he 100 breast in 51.14, ahead of Tennessee’s Gabe Nunziata (52.80). He won the 200 breast in 1:52.39, going 1-2 with Jordan Tiffany (1:53.15).

ASU’s Remi Fabiani broke the meet record to win the 200 free in 1:31.23, ahead of Tennessee’s Nikoli Blackman (1:31.41). Lucien Vergnes won the 100 back in 45.84. Fabiani also won the 100 free in 41.10 ahead of Tennessee’s Pedro Sansone (41.83).

Tennessee’s Gui Caribe won the 50 free in 18.61, just ahead of Kulow (18.82).

Tennessee’s Martin Espernberger won he 200 fly in 1:42.89, going 1-2 with Aidan Hill (1:44.55).

Arizona State’s JT Ewing won the 200 back in a meet-record 1:39.00.

Tennessee’s Koby Bujak-Upton won the 500 in 4:17.90. Tony Laurito won the 200 IM in 1:45.29 ahead of Vergnes (1:45.75).

Fabiani, Kharun, Tommy Palmer and Kulow won the 200 free relay in 1:13.72, breaking the meet record and finishing ahead of Caribe, Sansone, Blackman and Ben Bricca (1:16.35).
