Cross Training Options to Remain Fit in the Water (Video)

Staring at the black line on the bottom of the pool can become a challenge for both competitive and recreational swimmers. Fortunately for those who enjoy the water, but might want a change of pace, there are several cross-training options that emphasize remaining in the pool, and also ensure fitness enthusiasts will receive a satisfying workout.

In this Swimming World feature, staff member Casey McNulty examines the benefits of three other aquatic endeavors: Water Polo; synchronized swimming; aquatic yoga. Each of these options provides fitness benefits, along with a shift from the day-to-day chase of that familiar black line.

While water polo can enhance leg strength through treading water, synchronized swimming (also known as artistic swimming) can promote breath control. Finally, aquatic yoga emphasized the areas of balance, flexibility and relaxation.

These are all great options to mix things up. Don’t forget about strength and mobility (injury) training in the water as with resistance equipment. Aqualogix and Hydrorevolution have some great pieces to use for cross training and they aren’t the typical foam dumbbells.
