Cooper Deryk set the Ute Natatorium record in the 100 butterfly for the second time in as many meets Saturday to lead Utah to a 179-121 win over BYU.

Deryk stopped the clock at 47.14 seconds in the 100 fly, downing the mark he set a week ago in a dual meet with Colorado Mesa. Deryk also won the 50 free in 20.28 seconds and swam legs on the winning 200 medley and 200 free relays.

That medley relay – Andre Ungur, Andrew Britton, Deryk and Finn O’Haimhirgin – started the meet with a victory in 1:27.61, outracing BYU’s A squad by .06 seconds. Ungur won the 100 backstroke.

Felix Chiun, second to Deryk in the 50, won the 100 free convincingly in 44.28 and anchored the winning 200 free relay with Santi Contreras, Britton and Deryk.

Nathan Ramey and Nick Becker went 1-2 in the 1,000 free for Utah, as did Dylan Becker and Nick Becker in the 500. Preston Planells won the 200 back. Tony Chen swept both diving events.

“There was a tremendous attitude and effort from the guys today and great resiliency,” Utah coach Joe Dykstra said. “We have had a hard three weeks of training and they were able to fight through and put up some really good performances today. That was almost 100 percent related to their attitude and the team effort, which you saw on display and how much they care about each other.  I am really proud of the team culture that brings us this kind of win.  I am proud of our seniors as well. Felix had a really good day and Robby has been out medically and was able to do a relay split and put up one of his best times ever on no training.”

BYU’s stroke depth kept it in touch in the meet. Josue Dominguez swept the breaststroke events. Second to him in the 200 breast was Brad Prolo, who earned victories in the 200 individual medley and 200 fly. Javier Nicolas was first in the 200 free and second in the 100 fly.

“The men swam really well today even though we came up short,” BYU coach John Brooks said. “Tama Tuitama, Brad Prolo and Jose Dominguez all swam really well. These guys didn’t back down and kept fighting to the end.”
