Coaches Corner: Tips for Enhancing Streamline Skills After the Turn (Video)
For several months, coach Andrew Sheaff has been a valuable contributor to Swimming World, offering tips on a variety of skills. In this latest edition of Coaches Corner, Sheaff takes the time to review turns, which can often be the difference between winning a race, suffering a setback or narrowly missing a best time. Specifically, Sheaff focuses on the success swimmers can find the water after completing their turns.
In the video, Sheaff notes the importance of swimmers producing a strong streamline after pushing off the wall. When coaching, Sheaff instructs his swimmers to glide to a specific point in the pool before they begin kicking or initiating their breakout. Markers on the bottom of the pool can be used to identify their glide point, or a cone or fin can be used to mark the point. This strategy emphasizes the importance of the glide and underwater phase after the turn, and streamline improvement is often developed.
In identifying glide points, Sheaff recommends starting with a modest distance, and extending that mark over time.
