CJ Moran Named Head Coach at Southern Connecticut State; Assistant Under Late Tim Quill

Southern Connecticut State University Director of Athletics Terrance Jones announced that C.J. Moran has been named the next head coach of the SCSU men’s and women’s swimming & diving programs. Moran becomes just the second head coach to lead the Owls in nearly three decades, succeeding the late, legendary coach Tim Quill.

A former four-year letterwinner for the Owls (1995-99), Moran is currently in his third stint on the SCSU coaching staff. He previously served as an assistant coach from 2000-01 and 2002-05, and most recently returned as an assistant coach. He has been a central figure in the program that has won 35 combined Northeast 10 Conference Championships.

“There is no one more prepared, or more deserving, to lead our swimming & diving family forward than C.J. Moran,” said Jones. “C.J. is an Owl through and through – as a student-athlete, as an alumnus, and as a coach. He learned under Coach Quill, he helped build this dynasty, and he embodies the values of excellence, compassion, and belonging that define Southern. We are incredibly proud to have him lead both programs into this next chapter.”

Moran competed for SCSU under Bruce Hutchinson, Tim Wise and Quill and was part of the foundation that established the Owls as the premier program in the Northeast 10. As an assistant, he has coached numerous NE10 champions, All-Americans, and NCAA qualifiers.

“I am extremely honored to be chosen as the next head coach of the Southern Swimming and Diving Program,” Moran said. “Words cannot even describe how thankful I am for the overwhelming support I have received from my family, friends, SCSU’s athletic administration, our current swimmers and divers, and my SCSU Swimming and Diving Alumni family throughout this process.”

Moran holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from Southern Connecticut State University.

“I am excited for the opportunity to continue to work with our student athletes and to further pursue the tradition of excellence of SCSU Swimming and Diving that was set forth by my predecessors Dr. Bruce Hutchinson, Tim Wise, and Tim Quill,” Moran said.

The appointment comes after a historic and emotional 2025-26 season for the Owls. Following the sudden passing of Coach Quill on February 10, 2026 – two days before the NE10 Championships – the women’s team captured its sixth-consecutive and 18th overall NE10 title in a “Win for Tim”. Quill, in his 27th season at Southern, built one of the most successful programs in SCSU and NE10 history, earning 17 men’s and 18 women’s NE10 titles.

Moran will assume head coaching duties immediately and will lead both the men’s and women’s programs heading into the 2026-27 season.
