Cameron Van Der Burgh Posts Swift 50 Breast During Prelims of the 2015 FINA World Cup Tokyo

Cameron Van Der Burgh of South Africa kicked off the Tokyo stop of the 2015 FINA World Cup series by grabbing the first place seed in the men’s 50-meter breaststroke. Van Der Burgh posted a time of 27.59, while Chuck Katis of the USA was the only other athlete under the 28-second mark.

Molly Hannis of the USA leads the competition in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke going into tonight’s finals. Hannis turned in a time of 1:07.12 to finish almost an entire second ahead of the competition. Leiston Pickett of Australia grabbed the second place seed with a 1:08.08 while Reona Aoki finished third with a 1:08.25.

The women’s 100-meter fly saw some fierce competition with the top four qualifiers posting times within .43 seconds of each other. Felicia Lee of the USA grabbed the top time with a sizzling 59.43, but Rikako Ikee was a close second with a time of 59.44. Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu posted a final time of 59.70, while Natsumi Hoshi was fourth with a time of 59.86.

Australia’s Mitchell Larkin secured the first place seed in the men’s 100-meter back finishing with a time of 52.99. Ryosuke Irie (53.98) and USA’s David Plummer (54.04) grabbed the second and third place seeds respectively.

Emily Seebohm of Australia finished exactly one second shy of the world record in the women’s 50-meter back, posting a final time of 28.06. Natalie Coughlin of the USA turned in a quick 28.44 to join her as the second place seed. Japan’s Emi Moronuki grabbed third with a 28.52.

Andrew Michael of the USA leads the pack going into tonight’s finals of the men’s 50-meter fly with a time of 23.87.

Hungary’s Zsuzsanna Jakabos currently leads the women’s 800-meter free after posting a time of 8:45.93 from heat one. The final heat of the 800 free will swim tonight with finals.
