Cam McEvoy Throws Shade at the Enhanced Games; ‘Seriously? That’s All You Got’
Australian sprint star Cam McEvoy, the world-record holder in the 50-meter freestyle, took to social media on Sunday night to throw shade at the Enhanced Games. After Greece’s Kristian Gkolomeev clocked a time of 20.81 in the 50-meter freestyle, a mark faster than McEvoy’s world record of 20.88, McEvoy posted a pair of memes on Instragram.
One image showed NBA legend Michael Jordan surrounded by the “Monstars” from the original Space Jam movie. The second image was a meme of famed chef Gordon Ramsay yelling at a contestant on one of his TV shows, “Seriously? That’s All You Got!” That message was clearly directed at the Enhanced Games and Gkolomeev, who raced under no-holds-barred conditions – fueled by the use of performance-enhancing drugs and the ability to wear a polyurethan swimsuit that has been banned since 2010.
McEvoy has been a leading voice for clean sport since the Enhanced Games was announced, repeatedly noting that any performance by an Enhanced athlete would not be considered legitimate. Indeed, that is the scenario surrounding Gkolomeev’s time in the 50 freestyle from Sunday night, as it will not be recognized in any official capacity within the world of swimming. More, McEvoy suggested that an athlete benefiting from doping and a banned suit should be able to cut more than .07 off the official world record.
The reigning Olympic champion in the 50 freestyle, where he is also a world champ, McEvoy spent years chasing down the 20.91 world record of Brazilian Cesar Cielo. He succeeded in that pursuit at the China Open in March, going 20.88 behind pure talent and work.
