Bruno Fratus Puts Up 21.9 in 50 Free Heats at Speedo Sectionals Plantation

Brazilian Olympian and 2019 Worlds silver medalist Bruno Fratus swam his one and only event on Saturday at the Speedo Sectionals Plantation meet in Florida as he won the 50 freestyle with a 22.16. Fratus, 30, was slow off the blocks in finals tonight, out-racing his Coral Springs teammate Renzo Tjon-a-Joe (22.39), who represents Suriname internationally. Fratus swam a 21.97 this morning, which is two tenths slower than his season best of 21.7 from January.

Fratus is one of the top sprinters in the world and is certainly a favorite to win a medal in Tokyo this summer for Brazil.

RESULTS

Fellow-30+-year-old Olympian Alia Atkinson was also in attendance at the Speedo Sectionals Plantation meet as she took the sprint double on Saturday night. Atkinson won the 50 breaststroke with a 31.37, dropping from her 32.0 this morning. Later in the session, she won the 50 butterfly with a 27.30, dropping from her 27.8 this morning.

Atkinson is likely to swim in her fifth Olympics this summer while representing Jamaica.

Azura Aquatics won three total events on Saturday at the Speedo Sectionals Plantation with Celina Marquez starting the night victoriously in the 100 backstroke. Marquez was a 1:03.54 in winning the event ahead of Anna Freed (1:04.08) of Sarasota Tsunami. Yeziel Morales followed that up with a win of his own in the men’s 100 back at 57.60, just ahead of Fernando Ruvalcaba Cruz (58.01).

Then 16-year-old Raphael Windmuller, swimming unattached for Azura, won the 50 breaststroke with a 28.92.

Azura nearly got a fourth win in the women’s 50 freestyle with Allyson Ponson, but she was out-touched by 13-year-old Erika Pelaez of Eagle Aquatics, who swam a 26.10 to Ponson’s 26.12.

The Gator Swim Club got a pair of wins on Saturday night in Plantation with Tom Peribonio taking the 200 IM with a 2:03.88, and Santiago Corredor winning the 400 free at 3:55.38.

Peribonio represents Ecuador internationally and Corredor represents Colombia.

26-year-old Runar Borgen also won the 50 butterfly with a 24.58, while Bluefish’s Summer Smith took the 200 IM (2:19.02) at the Speedo Sectionals Plantation meet.

Michelle Morgan also won the 400 freestyle with a 4:18.02, just out-touching Olivia McMurray (4:18.05) of Swim Florida.
