Bowling Green Swimming Honors BGSU Hall of Famer With 2015 Tom Stubbs Relays

Bowling Green swimming spent the afternoon honoring BGSU Hall of Famer Tom Stubbs with the 2015 Tom Stubbs Relays competition.

The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving program began the 2015-16 season on Friday afternoon at Cooper Pool, as they hosted the Tom Stubbs Relays. Bowling Green, Toledo, Oakland, Youngstown State and Akron participated in the meet, which included 10 team relay events.

Prior to the meet, BGSU recognized Tom Stubbs, a 2007 inductee into the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame, who the Tom Stubbs Relays is named after. Director of Athletics Chris Kingston presented Stubbs, a former student-athlete and long-time coach of the BGSU swimming and diving program, with his Hall of Fame medal.

“Today was pretty awesome with Coach Tom Stubbs being able to make it to the meet,” head coach Matt Ense said. “It was an honor for me to meet Coach Stubbs for the first time. As a swimmer, my first collegiate meet was the Tom Stubbs Relay, so this was a special day. I thought it was a special moment with how many people were here at the beginning of the meet, and we are appreciative of Director of Athletics Chris Kingston and other members of the administration being here for it as well.”

The 200 Medley Relay was the first race of the day, with four Bowling Green relay teams partaking. The top BGSU team finished second in a time of 1:44.83, just .16 seconds off the previous meet record. Akron, who won the first race of the day in a time of 1:44.41, set a new Tom Stubbs Relays record.

The Falcons had two more second place finishes in the second and third events of the afternoon, swimming the 3×100 Butterfly Relay in a time of 2:54.13 and the 3×100 Backstroke Relay in 2:52.63.

Over the next four events, the Falcons would turn in three third-place finishes and a fourth-place finish. In the 3×100 Breaststroke, BGSU had just two teams compete in the two heats, swimming a best time of 3:22.07 to finish fourth. The second team took home sixth. Oakland swam a meet record of 3:11.90 in the event, surpassing the previous meet record by nearly three seconds. The Golden Grizzlies had two meet records on the day.

The Orange and Brown finished third in each of the next three events – the 800 Freestyle Relay, the 400 Medley Relay, and the 200 Freestyle Relay. BGSU finished the meet with a third place finish in the 4×100 IM Relay and a fifth-place finish in the 400 Freestyle Relay.

The BGSU swimming and diving program will host the Jean Campbell Alumni Meet on Saturday morning as Homecoming festivities continue on campus this weekend. The Falcons will next be in the pool for their first dual meet of the season, as the Orange and Brown will host Ohio next Saturday at Cooper Pool in a meet beginning at 11:00 am.

The Oakland women’s swimming and diving team broke two meet records in the 300 breaststroke and 400 freestyle relays Friday afternoon at the Tom Stubbs Relays. The Golden Grizzlies also won the 200 and 1500 freestyle relays.
