Birthday Boy Cam McEvoy’s Flying Start To 2025 Continues At Sydney Open And Uni Nationals

Olympic champion Cam McEvoy has maintained his flying start to 2025 clocking his fourth World Top Ten time of 2025 in another dominant 50m freestyle win on the opening night of the Sydney Open and Uni Nationals Meet at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.

McEvoy celebrated his 31st birthday (May 13) clocking a sizzling 21.53 in the heats, just 0.05 outside his season’s best of 21.48 from last month’s Australian Open final before taking out the final in 21.73.

In four swims this year the self-made born-again sprint star has logged four times inside the World’s Top Ten -21.67, 21.48, 21.53 and 21,73 as he counts down to the Singapore World Championship Trials in Adelaide next month,

In last night’s final, McEvoy (Somerville House, QLD; Coach Tim Lane) scooted away to beat fellow Paris Olympians Flynn Southam (Bond, QLD; Coach: Chris Mooney) 22.22 and Will Yang (Sydney University, NSW; Coach Adam Kable) 22.34.

There were also encouraging signs for another Paris Olympian, 4x100m freestyle relay gold medallist Olivia Wunsch (Carlile, NSW; Coach Michaela Pattinson) who returned to racing after illness forced her withdrawal from the NSW State and Australian Open Meets.

Eighteen-year-old Wunsch finished second to Junior Pan Pac champion Milla Jansen (Bond, QLD; Coach Chris Mooney) in the women’s 50m freestyle final, Jansen winning in 24.97 with Wunsch second in 25.08 ahead of Japan’s Ai Soma (25.43)
