Men’s 200 backstroke

As a grad student, Adam Chaney has refashioned himself as a sprinter. But he’s got some distance left in his legs.

Chaney went 1:38.33 to win the 200 back. That downs the 2019 meet record of Texas’ Ryan Harty at 1:38.16. It’s a best time for Chaney, who had been 1:39.59 in a dual meet in November.

ASU went 1-2 for not the first time this meet, with JT Ewing jumping from fifth in prelims to second in 1:39.72. Arizona’s Alex Desangles got another podium spot in third in 1:41.43, with teammate Ryan Hardy fifth. In between was Aiden Gerst of Cincinnati.

Women’s 100 freestyle

Albane Cachot has been a revelation in her first year of college swimming. She can add a third individual title to the mix, with a meet record time of 47.42 seconds. That downs Claire Adams’ 2022 record of 47.46. Adams’ time of 47.32 from 2018 remains the conference mark.

The final produced only two A cuts. The other was Julia Wozniak, whose posted matching times of 48.46 in prelims and finals.

Arizona had four in the top five, followed by Riley Botton, Patricja Kondraskaite and Meric Demirtepe. The A final was all Arizona schools.

Women’s 200 breaststroke

Without a dominant Arizona favorite, the rest of the field could shine in the 200 breast. Flo Peter dominated the final, winning by more than a second in 2:08.11 for Houston. She was well ahead of TCU’s Nina Vadovicova.

Third was Arizona’s Eleni Gewalt in 2:10.08. Lucie Vasquez of Arizona State led teammate Sonia Vaishnani to the wall for fourth.

The A final featured swimmers from Iowa State (Grace Swoboda in sixth) and Kansas (Ryan Johnston in seventh).

There was no catching Houston’s Michelle McLeod, who scored 319.75 points to win by more than 65 points. She had been third in prelims but left no doubt in the final.

Kayden Hayes was the closest at 254.10 for Arizona State, earning second place. Arizona’s Zara Ayazi, the leader in prelims, finished third in 245.60.

The second-highest score of the finals came in the B final. Kansas’ Shiyun Lai was left to rue a tough prelims session that landed her 11th. She scored 260.55 at night. Lai won gold on 1-meter and silver on 3-meter at the meet.

Women’s 400 freestyle relay

It’s an Arizona sweep to cap a dominant week, but the ASU women had to work for it. The Sun Devils went 3:12.86 to nudge Arizona to the wall by less than seven tenths. It was all done by Albane Cachot in a heroic split of 46.60 to surge ahead after trailing by .46 seconds at the handoff. She pushed ahead for the first time at the 375-yard wall and held off Arizona anchor Julia Wozniak.

The quartet of Gerda Szilagyi, Julia Ullmann, Grace Lindberg and Cachot were 1.5 seconds off the meet record. Arizona went 3:13.55 with the team of Riley Botton, Patricija Kondraskaite, Meric Demirtepe and Wozniak. Cincinnati was third in 3:18.02.
