Australian Sam Short Cruises to Victory in 800 Freestyle TYR Pro Series in Sacramento
Australian Sam Short claimed victory in the men’s 800-meter freestyle as the TYR Pro Series stop in Sacramento got underway on Wednesday night. Short prevailed by more than seven seconds behind a time of 7:46.99. He was followed in second place by Alec Enyeart (7:54.38) while Ilia Sibirtsev (7:54.91) took third.
Short is one of several high-profile Aussies racing in the California capital this week. The 21-year-old was the silver medalist in the 800 freestyle at the 2023 World Championships and finished ninth in the event at last summer’s Olympic Games in Paris. Short recorded a split of 1:53.23 at the 200 and came through the midway point of the race in 3:50.61.
In the women’s 800 freestyle, New Zealand’s Eve Thomas earned the win with a time of 8:39.32. That performance was three seconds clear of the 8:42.49 of Hungarian Vivien Jackl, the only other competitor to go under 8:50.
The Pro Series will continue Thursday through Saturday, with full schedules featured on all three days. The Thursday slate includes the 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 50 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 400 individual medley.
