ACC Championships, Night 4: Claire Curzan Drops No. 2 All-Time 100 Back

Claire Curzan has been in good form this season for University of Virginia. Even by those standards, she was excellent on Friday night.

Curzan went 48.38 to set the pool record at the ACC Championships Friday at Georgia Tech. That moves her to the No. 2 all-time performer, with former teammate Gretchen Walsh holding the NCAA record at 48.10.

Yamato Okadome of Cal also added a meet record in the men’s 100 breaststroke later in the night, and helped the Golden Bears to a meet record in the 400 medley relay.

In the team standings, Virginia is in firm control of the women’s title race, and a relay DQ for Stanford means there’s 62.5 points separating Cal and the Cardinal in the battle for second. It’s only 28 between the old Pac-12 rivals in the men’s team standings, and that battle is for first.

All the action from Friday night:

Women’s 100 backstroke

Claire Curzan delivered a heck of a swim. In a race where only three swimmers broke 50 seconds, she was closer to 48-point. Curzan went 48.38. Her 48.83 in the morning was a best time, improving the 49.11 at NCAAs last year. Curzan’s time is behind only the 48.10 that Gretchen Walsh set in 2024 at this meet and a pair of 48.26 times she has. Katharine Berkoff went 48.55.

Second was Erika Pelaez in 49.54. Mary-Ambre Moluh of Cal was third in 49.64. Pitt’s Claire Jansen was fourth in 50.32.

Men’s 100 backstroke

There was only one Cal man in the final, and he was in an outside lane after finishing eighth in prelims. But that was all the Golden Bears needed.

Evan Petty came through with a victory by going 44.21, nearly downing Coleman Stewart’s meet record of 44.04 from 2020. Petty had been 45.51 in the morning to make the final by .22.

Quintin McCarty turned NC State into the big winner, though. The Wolfpack went 2-3-5-6. McCarthy led the way in 44.46. Kaii Winkler, the top seed in the morning, was 44.62 for third. Hudson Williams and Aiden Hayes followed, the only interrupting Notre Dame’s Tommy Janton in fourth.

The points move Cal into the lead by one point over Stanford and NC State into third.

Women’s 100 breaststroke

Welcome to the college postseason, Eneli Jefimova. The NC State freshmen went 56.77, downing a 2016 pool record belonging to Lilly King. It also gets within .05 of the meet record set in 2022 by Sophie Hansson of NC state.

Efimova was behind Louisville’s Anastasia Gorbenko at the halfway point but roared home to beat the Israel by .26 seconds. Gorbenko went 57.03. It was a ways back to the battle for third, in which Stanford’s Lucy Bell went 57.74 to edge Emma Weber of Virginia. The points for the Cavs, though, stretch their lead over Cal to more than 150 points.

Men’s 100 breaststroke

Yamato Okadome delivered a historic swim for Cal, the Japanese international going 50.32 to gouge three tenths out of Denis Petrashov’s meet record from last year. Okadome was more than a second clear of the field and part of a 1-3-5 finish for the Golden Bears that, with Lucca Gissendaner in 51.48 and Hank Rivers in 51.68, moves Cal 12 points clear of Stanford in the team race.

Eli Martin of Virginia Tech finished second in 51.36. Daniel Li bolstered Stanford in fourth, which won the B final via Zhier Fan. Both Fan, in 51.74, and 11th-place Abram Mueller (ninth in 51.96) swam times that would’ve finished in the top eight for the Cardinal.

Women’s 400 medley relay

Claire Curzan, the second-fastest 100 backstroker in history, can’t even get a swim in that leg of the 400 medley relay. Such is the depth of the Virginia women’s team.

With Curzan splitting 48.44 on fly and Sara Curtis leading off in 50.07, the Cavaliers went 3:20.42 to win by more than four seconds in a deluge. Aimee Canny filled in for Emma Weber in breaststroke. Anna Moesch brought it home in 45.53. The Cavaliers didn’t just win; they produced the fastest split in each leg of the relay. It’s within a shout of the 3:19.58 NCAA record the Cavaliers set last year, and it down a 2016 Stanford pool record of 3:26.14.

Part of the margin was a DQ for Stanford, Torri Huske taking off early on fly. That allows Cal to open up a 62.5-point lead in the battle for second behind UVA.

NC State was second in 3:24.65, with Louisville third. Cal was fourth but still gained big ground.

Men’s 400 medley relay

A win in the 100 back, a win in the 100 breast – makes sense that it’s a win in the 400 medley relay for California. Evan Petty and Yamato Okadome – the aforementioned winners – teamed with Casper Puggaard and Martin Wrede to lead Cal to the win in 3:00.74. That’s a meet record, downing the 3:01.10 set in 2023 by NC State.

The win opens up a 28-point gap on Stanford in the team standings and 160 over NC State. Florida State was second, continuing an excellent meet for the Seminoles. Max Wilson, Tommaso Baravelli, Michel Arkhangelskiy and Logan Robinson went 3:01.08. That edged the 301.66 of NC State, with Virginia fourth in 3:01.75 and Virginia Tech fifth in 3:01.86.

Notre Dame’s team scoring gets dented by a DQ that denies them a top-eight finish.
