6 Meet Records Fall at Day 1 of Malaysia Open

On the first day of the 59th Malaysia Open Swimming Championships, six meet records fell.

Camille Lily Mei Cheng started the night with a meet record in the 100 freestyle. The Team Hong Kong swimmer touched in 55.34. Second place went to teammate Kin Lok Chan in 57.87. Team Indonesia’s Sagita Putri Krisdewanti rounded out the top three in 58.05.

Another meet record fell in the women’s 100 breaststroke as Phee Jinq En touched in 1:08.65. Second went to Erika Kong in 1:12.26 and third went to Vanesssa Evato At in 1:13.06.

The men’s 100 breaststroke also saw the meet record fall when Sandeep Sejwal finished in 1:02.45. Ka Fai Kwok finished in 1:02.99 and Wong Fu Kang was third in 1:03.52.

In the men’s 400 IM, Ricky Anggawisjaja was well ahead of the field, touching in 4:36.63, six seconds slower than his prelims meet record of 4:30.97. Alex Tiong Sie Hung was silver in 4:42.66. Bronze went to Arvin Shaun Singh Chahal in 4:44.49.

In the men’s 100 freestyle, Triady Fauzi Sidiq won gold in 50.36. After tying for the top spot in prelims, Welson Sim Wee Sheng finished in 50.64 for second. Third place went to Aaron D’ Souza in 50.98.

Phiangkhwan Pawapotako was one of two swimmers under 5 minutes in the women’s 400 IM. The Team Thailand swimmer finished in 4:55.28. Silver went to Azzahra Permatahani in 4:58.49 while her Team Indonesia teammate Ressa Kania Dewi won bronze in 5:01.31.

Raina Saumi Grahana led a tight trio to the wall in the women’s 200 fly, finishing in 2:19.62. Nicholle Toh Fann Rui (2:19.79) and Azzahra Permatahani (2:20.91) followed closely.

Supriya Mondal‘s 2:00.54 won the men’s 200 butterfly. Muhammad Hamgari claimed silver in 2:03.06. Ayman Klezi earned bronze with his 2:03.80.

Team Hong Kong won the women’s 400 medley relay with the team of Stephanie Au Hoi-shunYvette Man-yi KongSze Hang Yu and Cheng in 4:03.10.

In the men’s 400 medley relay, Team Indonesia put together a record setting 3:45.49, with I Gede Siman S SudartawaDennis J TiwaGlenn Victor Sutanto, and Sidiq.

Looks like Stephanie Au’s time spent Baghdad by the Bay Cal Berserkeley!) was well spent; 100 back world- record leading off Hong Kong’s 400 MR today (55.48)!

Ah would but that it were so but she did swim for cal and made NCAA cuts so she had a fine collegiate career and will likely swim fit Hong Kong Rio.
