2021 Big Ten Women’s Championships Day 3 Finals: Maggie MacNeil Wins 100 Fly

The 2021 Big Ten Women’s Championships continued on Thursday with the Day 3 finals from Minneapolis.

The events are the 100 butterfly, 400 IM and 200 free and 3-meter diving finals.

Michigan placed a league-best six in the finals for tonight’s session as the Wolverines try to catch Ohio State, which built an early lead. The Wolverines had a good day, led by Maggie MacNeil winning the 100 butterfly, but still trail.

Big Ten Women’s 100 Butterfly

Michigan completed its 1-2 finish, after taking the top two seeds during prelims.

Junior Maggie MacNeil touched the wall in 49.68, a quarter of a second off of her own Big Ten meet record set last year and an NCAA “A” cut.

MacNeil went 1-2 with teammate Olivia Carter, another junior, who finished in 51.54, a “B” cut.

A pair of Northwestern swimmers followed as Madeline Smith took third in 52.09 and Miriam Guevera was fourth in 52.24.

Ohio State freshman Katherine Zenick finished fifth in 52.73, followed by Iowa sophomore Mallory Jump (52.81) and Indiana freshman Elizabeth Broshears (52.81), who tied for sixth, ahead of Iowa senior Kelsey Drake (53.21) in eighth.

Big Ten Women’s 400 IM

It was a freshman who had the top seed from the morning, but the seniors had something to say about it during finals.

Ohio State senior Kristen Romano won the 400 IM in 4:06.75, an NCAA “B” cut. She finished just ahead of teammate and fellow senior Katherine Trace, who finished second in 4:07.90.

Indiana senior Josephine Grote was third in 4:07.99.

Michigan freshman Katherine Ackerman had the top seed from the morning, dropped a half second and finished fourth in 4:08.37. Michigan teammate Victoria Kwan moved up to fifth (4:09.73), dropping three seconds from her prelim time.

Indiana junior Mackenzie Looze was sixth (4:12.13), followed by Minnesota freshman Megan Van Berkom (4:13.19) and fellow Gopher Kelli McCarthy (4:16.43).

Big Ten Women’s 200 Free

Nebraska senior Autumn Haebig hung on to her top seed and won the 200 free, finishing in 1:44.39, an NCAA “B” cut a half second ahead of the field.

Indiana freshman Ella Ristic was second in 1:44.89 to hold off Wisconsin junior Lillie Hosack (1:45.42).

Michigan’s Megan Glass was fourth (1:45.95), followed by Northwestern’s Ally Larson (1:46.22), Ohio State’s Amy Fulmer (1:46.24), Northwestern’s Selena Ozbilen (1:47.04) and Michigan’s Sophie Housey (1:47.07).

Indiana's Anne Fowler took the top spot in diving, followed by Nebraska's Abigail Knapton and Purdue's Emily Bretscher.
